Good QF matchups...predictions?

T Enqvist v (1) Roddick (most likely)
J Johansson v. Xavier Malisse
(8)N Kiefer vs JM Gambill
(2)M Fish vs. Dmitry Tursunov

Really interesting matchups...I've never seen Johansson play but he sounds very tough on hard courts...sounds like he has an amazing serve. But...Malisse returns pretty darn well especially if only has to block it back (does Johannson serve and volley???)...Malisse also covers the court extremely well...I can't really predict this since I've never seen Johansson play...but you would think that Malisse would be favored.

The Fish v. Tursunov match sounds awesome...I would love to see that one. Fish holds a 2-1 edge and has won the last 2 but they were both close and that was before Tursunov started his big climb up the rankings (except for that slight detour last week). He crushed Wayne Ferreira 4 & 0....and Mardy has struggled slightly dropping a set in each of his first two matches. I could see this one going either way...should be fun to watch.

Keifer v. Gambill...ordinarilly I would just pick Keifer for this one but Gambill seems to be playing very well....should be a tight one.

And Roddick...well, he should win.

I"ll go with Roddick (3 sets), Johannson, Gambill and Fish. But what do I know?

yes, J. Johansson likes to serv & volley... I saw him against Ferrero at the Aussie Open and I would say he's attacking the net about every second point when at his own serve.
As you said, his serve is quite a very big weapon. DID YOU SEE/READ THIS TODAY? In his match today against Blake, 1set set, he blistered in 18 of 18 1st serves (almost 90% of points won when his first serve was in) and he had 11 aces in 4 service games!!!

The 2nd set was less impressive, but still Johansson managed to win it.

He is almost 2 meters tall, he can serve around the 135mph mark... his forehand is also looking strong... I think he can become a good one, maybe soon.

Sweden is such a great tennis country, they have lots of good players almost all the time.

__________________________________________________ __

my picks would be:

J. Johansson (I think Johansson should be the clear favorite to win against Malisse, bookies should favor him as well)

Tursonov (Fish didn't look shaky only in his 1st round match... no, the same against Niemeyer as well... Fish played a lot of matches the last days: final in San José in singles AND doubles... this week also some matches, almost no rest, some 3 matches included)

Roddick (looks like a no brainer, but I'm not so sure ... but I think somehow he will manage to win)

Gambill? (sure, Kiefer can win this, but I'm not sure if he does... he has such a huge talent, but still so inconsistent)

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

Roddick and Enqvist are 1-1 in head to head with Roddick winning their last meeting. I think it can go either way, because Enqvist demonstrated in Davis Cup when he beat Philippoussis that he can return really big serves.

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

Well the first time they played was in 2001... Neither of them are remotely the same players that they were then and it was a tight 3rd set tiebreaker anyway. Plus it wasn't in the US lol.

But I agree it could be a very tough match nonetheless. I think the QF matchups by and large will all be pretty interesting.

Roddick and Enqvist are 1-1 in head to head with Roddick winning their last meeting. I think it can go either way, because Enqvist demonstrated in Davis Cup when he beat Philippoussis that he can return really big serves, but Roddick is on a real roll.

Gambill leads Kiefer 4-1, and looks like he is in good form, so I will go with Gambill on this one.

I would like it if either player from Malisse and Johansson wins, because I like both. However, Malisse seems to disappoint me and fail mentally in big matches, like at Wimbledon 2002, so I am going to go on Johansson here.

I really like Mardy Fish. I think that he is and will be great, and I like his dedication to both singles and doubles. Considering he has played seven singles matches and some doubles matches in 10 days, I think he may be feeling a bit tired, and his meetings with Tursunov have been close, so Tursunov has a great chance to win. I am still going to go with Mardy because he is one of my favs.

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

Mardy is one of my faves also, but I'm a little concerned about him. I've read a few places that he's having shoulder problems from how many matches he's played. That's disconcerting. I hope he's putting his health first.

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

His his soulder is sore from overuse. In grandslams, players have a good days rest between matches, but not at this level, and since he is playing doubles as well, he is feeling the strain of playing every day, twice on some days. I think that practically, he shouldn't go too hard against Tursunov because he might injure himself, and if he loses, it is alright because he equalled last year's result and won't drop in the rankings. The organizers are obviously going to try and accomodate him though because he is American, so maybe they will give him a bit more rest than usual.

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

reading all these messages about Fish's sore shoulder, combined with my own prediction/feeling/impression posted some hours ago, I think that, for punters, Tursonov getting +4 games as an underdog against Fish (Fish has to win such as 6-3 6-4 or higher in order to lose the bet or, for example, 6-4 6-4 to push it) or a bet on Tursonov straight up win at odds around +200(US) / 3.0(decimal) or better could be worth a try.

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

well James and Mardy have pulled out of the dubs because James is sick. That will help Mardy, though it stinks for them as a team!

I don't really care why his shoulder is hurting, I am still concerned about his health far more than I am concerned about whether he wins or not.

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

I doubt James is really sick. He doing this for Mardy because they have a slim chance against the Bryans, and he doesn't want to risk a fellow teammate getting injured during a great chance for another title. I think Woodbridge did the same when Woodforde made it to the Wimbledon semis, or I could be wrong.

Re: Good QF matchups...predictions?

Maybe so... I can't presume to know what's in their minds lmao, I can only go by what I read in the paper and take it with a grain of salt. And the paper says he is sick. I hope not for James's sake, but then again he doesn't play again for a couple weeks so it's not a problem for him. Mardy's shoulder certainly seems to be a more pressing concern.
