Marcelo Rios infamously dominated this tournament

Did you know that BellSouth 2003 was the last appearance in an ATP final for Marcelo Rios?

In fact, he always seemed to do well here, only to lose the big prize to heavyweights like...

David Sanchez (2003) 1/6 6/3 6/3
Julian Alonso (1997) 6/3 6/1
Hernan Gumy (1996) 6/4 7/5
Slava Doesedel (1995) 7/6 (3) 6/3

Interesting fact: there has never been a repeat winner in the 10 years of this tournament.

Re: Marcelo Rios infamously dominated this tournament

It certainly can't be a coincidence that he's fallen before his home crowd every time against less than impressive opposition. Last year he was up 6-1, 3-1 on Sanchez and then lost five games in a row and subsequently the match. Not that those four champions don't have distinctive qualities, I believe Alonso was once one of the three fastest servers in the world along with Rusedski and Philippoussis.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Re: Marcelo Rios infamously dominated this tournament

Thanks Marcelo for giving Gumy his only title.

Marcelo leads Gumy 5-1 or 6-1, and Gumy's only victory was that final.

I miss: Ivan Lendl, Korda, Novak, Bruguera, Rios, Kucera, Courier, Mantilla, Costa, Santoro and Ferreira.

Good luck to:

Gaudio, Murray, Florian Mayer, Chela, Nalbandian, Radek Stepanek, Volandri, Youzhny and Verdasco.
