I won't be surprised if he loses to Soeda. He was pathetic against Soeda when I saw him at Winston-Salem last year, was very lucky to get the win. Ryan is scheduled to play in the Dallas 2 Challenger after IW.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

I hate to be negative but I highly doubt he'll win this match. It's sad to see him in this bad form. The ranking slump could be a blessing in disguise. Ryan is playing challenger level tennis right now. Getting some wins on that level will hopefully rebuild his confidence. I have no idea what his coaching staff is telling him what to do but it's not working. Ryan is a poor mans Roddick so all of Andy's weaknesses are even greater in Ryan.

So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

And to make matters worse he actually seeks advice from Roddick daily according to what I've read online and from interviews he's given to the media. Not sure how smart that is!

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

Advice is great from a seasoned pro but Andy heard the exact something people are saying about Ryan and ignored it. Everyone new he had to be more aggressive but stayed as a big serving counter puncher, which is where Ryan is right now. I know Ryan can't afford it and I'm sure he's not interested but Brad Gilbert could do wonders for Ryan's game. That's my dream coach for him.

I'm soooo happy to be wrong about this match! I just hope Ryan puts up a good fight against Rafa. I'm sure Ryan won't win a set so I'm hoping for a 6-4 7-5 scoreline(One can dream).

So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

The bottom line is this - right now he is ranked #88 according to the live ATP daily ranking system. He wont win tomorrow hence he wont defend all of his 90 ATP points from last year and he his ranking will drop even further. I am not sure if Brad Gilbert would even consider working with Harrison.

It works both ways - Brad has a very successful record as a coach - if he were to take on Harrison and he did not improve - the blame would fall on Brad Gilbert.

Ryan H should get on his knees and BEG for Gilbert to coach him but I seriously doubt either guy wants this.

Prediction - by the end of the ATP 1000 Miami - Harrison is out of the top 100.

Hope i'm wrong...

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

Dropping out of the top 100 could be a good thing. Maybe then it'll get through to Ryan and his coaching staff that something has to change or he'll be a never was.

I had high hopes for Ryan when he first came on tour. As his game developed those hopes changed to Ryan having a top 20/30 career like Mardy, Isner, and Sam but even that is in question.

I'm pretty sure he won't. The live rankings take off last year's points at the beginning of the week. Ryan's #88 ranking already excludes his 90 pointer at Indian Wells last year.

Nevertheless, Ryan should play USA clay Challengers after Houston in my opinion. There are three in a row in which he can get some confidence and match wins before Roland Garros. But somehow I doubt he'll do this.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

I'll take this scoreline any day. Ryan was actually aggressive during a large part of the match. Against the big boys Ryan knows he has to be aggressive but when he plays Joe Schmo tennis player he goes into counter puncher mode.

IMO, it is hard for Ryan to be aggressive b/c of his limited groundies. Against good players, he is often pushed into a defensive position in the baseline rallies. It is hard to see it on tv b/c of the camera angle, but his groundstrokes are loopy (and tend to fall short). I'm afraid that if Ryan doesn't improve in this department, it will be tough for him to compete at the highest level. I wish that he would change his forehand technique. Even his backhand is kinda weak. Good serving allows Ryan to stay in many matches b/c a good serve allows him to control the point from the start. However in the return game, he has been relying on his opponent's errors to get the break. This is not gonna cut it against top players.
