Roddick Makes Debut, Haas Returns At Qatar Open

Roddick Makes Debut, Haas Returns At Qatar Open

By Brad Falkner
12/20/2003

Top-ranked Andy Roddick will begin the New Year with a debut appearance at the 2004 Qatar Exxon Mobile Open. The event will also mark the return of Tommy Haas, who sat out the entire 2003 season while recovering from multiple shoulder surgeries.

The $1 million Qatar Exxon Mobile Open, set for January 5-11th in the capital of Doha, marks the start of the 2004 hard court season.

A two-time Australian Open semifinalist, the 25-year-old Haas played his last Grand Slam match against 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round of the 2002 Open. In what was one Sampras' toughest tests in his Open title run, the former No. 1 prevailed with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 victory over Haas.

Haas played the rest of the indoor season in 2002, finishing the year at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris where he fell to Roger Federer in a third-round match on Halloween of 2002. Haas' entry protected ranking is No. 11; he can use this ranking for nine months or eight tournaments, whichever comes first.

Haas, who lives in Bradenton, Florida, reached a career-high rank of No. 2 in May of 2002. But he struggled with a sore serving shoulder for much of the 2002 season. He underwent surgery to repair a torn right rotator cuff last December and doctors told him he faced six months of rehab. It was the end of a painful season for Haas, whose parents were injured in a serious motorcycle accident in Sarasota, Florida last June.

The 32-player Doha draw features the 2002 Qatar champion Younes El Aynaoui and 2003 defending champion Stefan Koubek. Other notable entrants include Tim Henman, Guillermo Coria, Rainer Schuettler, Mark Philippoussis, Sebastien Grosjean, and Nicolas Massu.

Austrian lefthander Koubek defeated American Jan-Michael Gambill to win the 2003 Qatar Exxon Mobil Open at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex. During his 6-4, 6-4 win over Gambill, Koubek never lost his serve and broke Gambill's serve once in each set.

Well in another interview a little while back he said he wouldn't do it if he couldn't do it 100%... which I think is really admirable. Hopefully he's healthy and ready to go!

I think I read somewhere that he has entered all of his tournaments for a regular schedule, but if he's not ready when the time comes, he'll pull out. I really miss him and I want him to come back. I especially want him to come back in time for San Jose because I am going to that tournament.

well..basically all tennis players are dedicated to the sport... if i'm not mistaken... even anna kournikova did mention that unless her back injury recovers she will not join any tournament...the reason is the same...

if she cannot give in 100%, she'd rather not play...

Good luck to Tommy when he plays.
