Re: Donald Young

Donaldo is playing Amer Delic first round in New Haven, I think it's time to get the ever elusive first ATP win.

Tim Henman--Gael Monfils--James Blake--Donald Young--Rafael Nadal--Jo-Wilfried Tsonga--John Isner--Janko Tipsarevic--Richard Gasquet.

Re: Donald Young

ATP win #1 for Donald Young! The first of many.

4-6, 6-3, 6-4 over 79th ranked Amer Delic.

Davydenko up next. That's a loss, but it's already been a great tournament for Donald. He'll now go into the U.S. Open knowing that he can win on the ATP level.

Re: Donald Young

He lost to Davydenko 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. That's quite a performance.

What a strange match, though. He broke Davydenko five times, but was broken seven times himself.

I think he'll beat Chris Guccione at the U.S. Open.

Re: Donald Young

Just watched the match on ESPN. Reports of Young's "lack of weapons" have been greatly exaggerated. We're going to be seeing a lot of him in the future.

Re: Donald Young

While Donald still needs to mature in areas- I really enjoyed watching him play. Some good play at net, and some nice stuff from the back of the court. He has a fairly varied game- nice to see. I hope to see him do well in the future.

I like a lot of players.

Re: Donald Young

Some interesting quotes from Davydenko:

http://www.nhregister.com/site/news...._id=7592&rfi=6

"He was hitting really well and was confident hitting winners and making no mistakes sometimes and hitting fast," Davydenko said. "It was hard for me. Sometimes I win easily from baseline and have control from baseline and sometimes I have no control."

"He had great volleys, he had very good touch in the volleys," Davydenko said. "It surprised me that he hit from both sides.

"He's the first American player (Davydenko played) to play both sides, play both forehand and backhand so good and make winners from forehand and backhand. I never saw (that) before."

"Roddick (does) not play so good from backhand," Davydenko said. "Blake plays forehand fast and makes winners from forehand but this guy makes good winners (from both sides)."

Re: Donald Young

I don't want to jump on the Young bandwagon quite yet...poor kid...but that match with Davydenko was really quite impressive. His level of play picked up by a LOT and he showed that he can play at the same level as a top 10 quality guy, at least for about a set and a half. The mental ability will likely come as he's what...18? And he has some shots that need to be developed, obviously. But still, not bad at all.

Re: Donald Young

The Don is into the second round with a 6-7(2) 6-3 6-2 6-3 victory over Chris Guccione. His stats in this match were unbelievable and he hit some really flashy winners in that fourth set.

Re: Donald Young

Here are the match stats:

http://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/s...y7/1107ms.html

Very impressive indeed. He was not broken in the match. He had 9 aces, the same amount as Guccione (although Guccione was going up against a better returner ). He won 85% of first serve points and 50% of second serve points. His top serve speed was 130 mph, compared to 132 mph for Guccione. The kid is not a weakling by any means, despite how he has been portrayed.

I saw the first set, and Guccione served his ass off. His first serve percentage was 76%. That's why he won the set. I had to go when it was 2-0 Young in the second set, but it appeared that he was taking his game to another level. I'm going to watch the match on tape later, so I'll have more to say about it then.

Gasquet up next. Talk about an intriguing matchup. Gasquet should win this, but I'll bet that Young hangs with him.
