Don hasn't done very well since Australia, not winning qualifying matches in ATP events, and not going far in challengers. He's going to lose points this week since he lost in the first round of Tallahassee as the runner up finisher, he's out of the top 150 again. Luckily, he has virtually no points to defend until fall now, so even 3 good events in the next 3 months could see him in or near the top 100.
Don needs to set a goal of the MD of US Open and use that as motivation to get better results. He also needs to improve his serve and fix his error issues, and get in better overall shape. But these things wont be improved until he starts getting backing again, not just his parents. It's going to be tough, but he isn't far off at all. I just hope he can prove all his doubters wrong!
Donald is playing in Georgia this week on a green clay court. He's the #6 seed.
Donald Young USA [6] vs. Greg Ouellette USA [WC]
Fritz Wolmarans RSA [WC] vs. Ryler DeHeart USA
Alex Satschko GER [PR] vs. Catalin Gard ROU
Jesse Levine USA [2] vs. Tim Smyczek USA
This is Donald's section in the draw. He should win his first 2 matches, and then in the QF, the winner of Smyczek and Levine is likely awaiting. Hopefully he wins his first round and goes deep from there, he needs a good week. Go for it Donald!
Donald won easily, 6-1 6-2. He plays DeHeart tomorrow as the 3rd match on the center court, we can follow the match by the updates on the tournaments twitter page. www.twitter.com/savchallenger The winner of tomorrows match will play either Smyczek or Gard on Friday.
Donald won today 6-1 6-2 and plays Sweeting in the SF. That will be a tough match but he can do it, Sweeting played a long match and Donald is right around his home area and playing well this week. A win tomorrow would have him in the final vs. either Sirianni or Nishikori.
Donald lost 4-6 1-6 to Sweeting, he was broken immediately in the first game, he had opportunities in the first set to get back the break and failed to capitalize on his chances. Right now Ryan is a level above Donald and that is reflected by the score. In any case, this was a good week for Don after some struggles and his ranking should now be back within the top 150 with nothing to defend these next months.
His next scheduled tournament is next week in Sarasota, let's hope he has a great run in Florida!
Donald plays Sirianni in R1, difficult but very winnable. In the second round he would play Guccione/Satschko, two players coming off injuries. He could play Levine in the QF.
Donald has a good draw to make it to the SF again this week, hopefully he makes it there and goes two steps further and wins the title!
Well, DY lost to Smyczek in the semis. The other thing about that loss is that he didnt make it into the qualies of Newport, or get the last MD WC.
I guess he'll have a week off till Aptos, then ATL. Hopefully if he goes deep in the draw at Aptos he'll at least get a MD WC if he's still competing at sign in time.
Aptos is going to be the last chance for DY to earn enough pts to get DA into the US Open b/c of the 6 wk cutoff deadline. He's about 50 pts way from the 104 ranking, which means he would have to get to the finals to get enough pts. There'll probably be a withdrawl or two ahead of him, Del Potro etc, so he might be good with just getting to the semis.
Other than that, he's gonna need a WC or come thru qualies again.
DY's in the qtrs of Aptos after another 3 set win. He plays Bozoljac next, I think they're about even in their H2H. Anyways, 2 more wins and he'll be in the finals and the 55 rankings pts from that should put him in the top 100.
He's 4-3 against Bozoljac, but has lost the last two. He just needs to keep grinding out these wins.
