Still with Roger Smith.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

Too bad he didn't qualify for AO main draw, but he's racking up some wins and with the next win he equals his 2012 total.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

He's in, draws Russell in Round 1. Russell smoked him in the same tournament last year.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think Russell will smoke DY again.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

I saw last year's DY-Russell match at SAP and Donald's play was uninspired and uncreative, and he didn't really snap out of it until the end. Of the four players that night (+ Malisse-Ginepri undercard), Donald clearly had the best shotmaking arsenal. Russell is a tenacious and crafty vet, the type that knows how to grind Donald down to a snapping point, and make the most out of his ability.

Anyway, good luck to both, and may the winner take out Raonic in the second round. Harrison looms later in that part of the draw, if he can bust through.

As expected, DY did not have the game or mental toughness to beat Russell. He is ranked 202 this week. At least he gained 12 points for qualifying.

Next week however, he will likely drop further. He loses 45 points for winning one match at Memphis last year (last win before his 17-match losing streak). If he does not defend them, he will drop to the 240's. He may not even be able to play Memphis. Right now, he is #5 alternate on the qualifying list.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

Russell next.

Quote:
Donald Young will play again on Sunday to secure a main draw appearance at the 2013 U.S. National Indoor Championships after a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over fellow American Denis Kudla on Stadium Court. Young dominated play from the baseline and net, playing aggressive but controlled tennis to put away Kudla, the 2010 US Open junior finalist. Young, who reached the 4th round at the 2011 US Open, will face either Michael Russell or Christian Harrison in the final qualifying round. A multiple junior Grand Slam champion, Young reached the second round in Memphis last year and is hoping to secure an appearance in the main draw once again.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

Finally a win over Russell, 46 63 76(7). I was so annoyed by this match, Donald served for it and then Russell served for it. Such a chokefest, thought it would never be over.

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

These pretty much sum it up:

Quote:
Ricky Dimon ‏@RD_Tennistalk

Donald Young had zero aces and TEN DOUBLE-FAULTS while getting broken SEVEN times and he still won.

Ricky Dimon ‏@RD_Tennistalk

Russell had 2 aces and EIGHT doubles and saved ONE OF NINE break points, and he STILL took Young to a third-set tiebreaker

Re: 2013 Cheering Thread

I'd like to think DY could beat Malisse if he brought all of his marbles.
