TOP SEEDS PUT TO THE TEST

There will be first class tennis from the first round this year in Rome, with the top seeds tested as soon as the first ball is hit.

World number one Roger Federer takes on clay court specialist Juan ignacio Chela, while at the other end of the draw reigning champion Rafael Nadal, seeded two, takes on former Rome champion Carlos Moya: one of this year's most dangerous floaters. Neither match is expected to be a walkover. (...)

Nadal to face Moya in Rome Masters opener

May 06 2006 at 01:54PM

Rome - Defending champion Rafael Nadal was drawn on Saturday against 2004 winner and mentor Carlos Moya for the first round of the Rome Masters.

Nadal can match Guillermo Vilas's record 53-match winning streak on clay if he wins the tournament, which begins on Monday.

In head-to-head match-ups, Nadal and Moya have a 2-2 record. The two Mallorca natives are good friends and frequent practice partners.

Moya beat Nadal in their last meeting in March in the second round of the Masters Series event in Key Biscane, Florida.

Top-ranked Roger Federer opens against Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela in the other half of the draw.

As of Saturday, each of the Top 10 players in the rankings were entered.

Moya says he's the last chance to stop Nadal

May 6, 2006, 20:03 GMT

Estoril, Portugal - Carlos Moya says he's the only man who can stop teenaged Spanish compatriot Rafael Nadal from tying the all-time clay-court win streak of Guillermo Vilas.

Moya, who serves as mentor and friend to Roland Garros champion, was drawn Saturday to face the teenaged second seed in the first round of the Roma Masters which begins Monday.

Just over a month ago, Moya schooled the 19-year-old in a match in Miami on hardcourt.

And he says he can do it again.

'It will be a tough match against Rafa, but I think I can beat him,' said the former world number 1 and 1998 French Open champion. 'If I don't then I think he will go all the way to tie the win record.'

Nadal's title victory last weekend in Barcelona lifted him to 47 consecutive wins on clay.

Winning a second Rome title a week from Sunday would nudge his record to 53, the same as Vilas, who achieved the feat nearly three decades ago.

'I'm expecting to play better on Tuesday than I did today,' said Moya, beaten in a wind-whipped Estoril semifinal 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 by Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

'Rafa's on a great streak, but it's got to end sometime. I think that could happen against me.'

Re: ~*~ Vamos Rafa in Rome ~*~

Just a quick update.

Rafa came to Rome on Saturday and practised in the afternoon, as reported on the official site:
Quote:
06/05/2006 19:22 - NADAL PRACTICE SESSION DRAWS HUGE CROWD

Rafael Nadal made his first appearance on centre court on Saturday.

Even though he was only training with fellow Spaniards, his mere presence drew a big crowd and the stadium was soon filled, forcing organisers close the gates, leaving fans outside.

Rafael won the Rome masters event last year and has been undefeated on clay ever since, picking up a string of titles, the latest in Barcelona last week.

His winning streak of 47 matches is already the second longest on record. If he goes all the way this year, he will equal the record set by Argentina's Guillermo Vilas.

But there will be several obstacles on the way, starting out with Carlos Moya in the first round.
On Sunday he took part in a doubles exhibition; he played with Gaston Gaudio against Roger Federer and Ivan Ljubicic. The match, played on the Olympic stadium, was umpired by football star Francesco Totti. No news as to who won.

More pics in the Pictures Thread.

In addition to playing singles, Rafa is also playing doubles with David Ferrer. Their first match is against the Poles, Fyrstenberg/Matkowski.
The doubles draw: http://www.atptennis.com/en/common/T...06/416/MDD.pdf

Rafa's doubles match is scheduled for Moday not before 6 pm. His singles match against Carlos is most probably going to be played on Tuesday.

Monday OOP: http://www.atptennis.com/en/common/T...006/416/OP.pdf

Rafa will also umpire the Champion's Tie-Break between Nicola Pietrangeli/Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tony Roche/Carlos Moya, which is to be played on Monday at 12.45.

VAMOS RAFA!!!
