Re: Davis Cup

So, assuming that Milos will indeed be 100% back, the team for Israel will surely be him, Dan and Vasek. But who do we think will be #4? I assume Frank probably won't play, given his conflict with Tennis Canada recently, do we know if Peter or Phil will be ready by then? If both are back to health, Bester is the easy choice there, I think. If not, then who as #4? Chvojka? Diez? PLD? Hopefully it won't matter, but, especially with Milos not in regular match form, it certainly could.

I was thinking about this recently, and was a little scared that if Milos wasn't ready, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that our DC team for such a critical tie could include both Chvojka and Diez, which is crazy

Re: Davis Cup

Milos is 50-50 for the Davis Cup!
2011 seazon is almost over, so for Milos is much better to take rest of the year off and use protective ranking next year.
In my opinion Milos needs to be 110% sure that his hip injury doesn't come back.

Re: Davis Cup

Bester is signed up for a challenger in Spain the week before DC and nothing the week of, so that is consistent with him expecting to go to Israel. It might make even better sense to warm up on hard rather than clay, but maybe he wasn't sure of making the cut for the hard court challenger that week.

Re: Davis Cup

I think if milos comes back we are def favorites to win this. I also think vasek has a very good chance to beat sela, especially if the court is fairly quick

Re: Davis Cup

Pospisil and Raonic both should beat Weintraub so we either need to win the doubles which I think its 40/60 or Raonic has to beat Sela which is 50/50.

Really this tie is 60/40 Canada in my mind, we could win it by the end of the second day, or it could come down to Pospisil/Weintraub in the 5th match.

Peter Polansky
Nestor - Chvojka - Pospisil - Raonic - Peliwo

Re: Davis Cup

I dont think this tie is 60/40 Canada at all.

- Milos hasn't played since Wimbledon
- Pospisil beating Weintraub is not a foregone conclusion
- The Israelis are clear favorites in doubles
- Sela is a fantastic Davis Cup player.

Particularly given that the tie is in Israel, I think we are the clear underdogs.

Two years ago, I would have agreed with you.

Sela is not a good Davis Cup player, that is a myth. His wins in the past two years are: Marcin Gawron and Andreas Haider-Maurer. That's it. His loses over the past two years are Jerzy Janowicz, Jurgen Melzer, Nicholas Massu and Fernando Gonzalez, all in straights except Massu in 4. That is not good at all.

Vasek is ranked #120 in the world. Amir has beaten exactly ZERO players ranked higher than 150 and only two ranked higher than 200, Matt Ebden and Jerzy Janowicz.

Elrich and Ram are not a good doubles team anymore. That time has past. They are ranked 17th in the team rankings this year despite playing together all season.

As I said, two years ago, I would have been afraid of this tie, but now, I think Canada is a slight favourite here.

Peter Polansky
Nestor - Chvojka - Pospisil - Raonic - Peliwo

Re: Davis Cup

Canada is the slight favorites, based on the fact Sela is in zero form whatsoever, Weintraub isn't a good player, and the Canadians can definitely win the doubles and Milos should win both his matches. But it's maybe 53/47 Canada. Not 60/40. Weintraub can beat Pospisil, and Sela can beat both Raonic and Pospisil. Erlich/Ram are slight but definite favorites over Nestor/Pospisil. The Israeli's are always tough at home with their crowds. It can go either way, but the Canadians have the better overall roster and need to take advantage.

Re: Davis Cup

Well, I am kind of sad to see Polansky because a) it takes him away from the chance to get some points and some confidence in the Canada Futures, and b) I suspect it may mean that Bester is still not better (he withdrew from the Spanish challenger this week). Still hopefully Polansky will see this as a vote of confidence and a belief that he has not sunk into irrelevance (which I expect on bad days he wonders).

I think the tie is very difficult to call - so much of it is mental. Pospisil showed us in the last tie that he could lose to the lower ranked player and then come back and beat the higher ranked player in straight sets. And any of the other players could subvert expectations based on rankings in that way.

Re: Davis Cup

eventually when nestor retires, its gonna be raonic/shamasdin for doubles at that point or raonic/pospisil (both competent doubles players) but that would mean those two would be playing lots of tennis. so ideally for me, i wanna see shamasdin/raonic or pospisil.
