Erik played well it would seem, but fell in three sets.
This was the first time I ever saw Erik play. It was quite the contrast with Polansky - Peter seems to have much more natural talent and more weapons, but Erik was getting the most of what he had yesterday. Mannarino was off most of the day and Erik was intelligently winning points. At the same time, he missed a ton of easy shots, several weak second serves that he couldn't get back in play.
Overall I left with the impression that Erik's current ranking flatters him compared to his natural talent level, but I can see him time and again outsmarting more gifting players at the challenger and futures level. Look forward to another chance to see him play.
In summary though Mannarino was the more solid player yesterday and deserved to win. Erik got very tight up 3-1 in the third and his level dropped considerably.
