Frustrated, for sure. I don't know about angry - I was trying to figure out his attitude. To some extent it looked to me like he had sort of checked out.

Certainly Raonic was more visibly angry in his match.

that would be surprising for more than one reason

Milo's often gets angry, but it's not that clear unless you watch him often, when he starts snapping his racquet back and forth between points.

milos being frustrated isnt what was surprising

vasek being mentally checked out was surprising..you wouldnt think someone who needs wins and could use some confidence would ever, at any point just decide they were done

Well, I could be wrong. He certainly didn't look like he had any belief, but to me that wasn't surprising, given that he has failed to win a tour-level match this year. Maybe I was projecting, but I was imagining him thinking "oh no, here comes another defeat - I just can't win these matches."

Off like the proverbial house on fire (serving at 4-0, won 16 of 21 points). Guess he's happy to be back on hardcourts!

And then loses next 4 games, and goes on to lose the set in a TB.

I am ready to declare that Vasek is struggling with a serious mental issue.

Re: Vasek Pospisil

im wondering if there could be a physical issue. He seems to be struggling with his serve lately. Now that could be nothing but sometimes if a guy who normally serves well is all of a sudden serving like crap there could be something behind it

he's serving at 49% with 4 double faults and only 4 aces. its at 29% in the second set

here's something else:

at this point he has been broken 4/4 times

he has broken mitchell 4/11 times

I am wondering the same thing. Apart from the stats, when I was watching him in Newport, there didn't seem to be any of the usual pop on his serve. Although as he was also off in pretty much every other department, it could have just been a mental implosion.

Re: Vasek Pospisil

hopefully there is some momentum now for Pospisil, from dominating this second set tiebreak (7 points to 1)

(watching a feed of Steve Johnson dismantling Donald Young in the later's hometown - Johnson will crack the top 50 someday, barring severe injury)

Re: Vasek Pospisil

well mitchell also helped him. I think he double faulted twice in the tiebreaker

Re: Vasek Pospisil

It's quite saddening really watching Vasek right now.

Nearly a year ago, he was going places. Encouraging performances in challengers, won a round in Montreal, pushed Federer for a set. Then he qualified for the US Open. He also beat Isner in Valencia. It was all set up for him to succeed and become a very decent player.

It's not going so well though. Pretty poor year, and his game has fallen to pieces.

It's true, but it's not so surprising. A lot of the younger guys do well for a while and then fall back. Vasek in particular seems prone to this sort of thing.
