Re: Olek Dolgopolov Jr.

This is what it says on ATP-website:

Quote:
Spanish No. 16 seed Feliciano Lopez made his way safely into the second round, establishing a 6-3, 3-0 lead against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. when his opponent retired due to illness 51 minutes into the match.
Pfew, so no real injury.

Dolgo moved bad since 1st game.
After 1st set doctor has appeared on the court, has given some tablets
After 0-3 in second Dolgo has retired

Re: Olek Dolgopolov Jr.

Jan is a good player, especially on clay, but that is a pretty winnable match for Dolgo. Hopefully he wins, since there are some spots in the MD that are good for qualifiers. He needs to start translating his results to the ATP.

Re: Olek Dolgopolov Jr.

Pff, disappointing. Very good chance to qualify with this draw.

Indeed, let's hope he doesn't become a Lorenzi or Daniel.

Re: Olek Dolgopolov Jr.

It's too early yet to make the determination of what Dolgo is as a player, but the past 6 months, he's had chances to qualify and has been in a few ATP events directly, and has struggled mightily. A lot of it is mental, since it is hard for challenger guys to actually feel like they deserve to be on the main tour, unless they prove they do, and Olek hasn't yet. He also is too patchy and inconsistent in general, which may be due to his age and lack of matches against quality opponents.

It will be time to worry around July if he is still struggling on the ATP tour, because he has a hell of a lot of points to defend from July forward. This is his opportunity now to really do damage, so lets hope he takes advantage of this situation, because this may be the only chance he gets for a while.

Becoming another Lorenzi would mean he literally becomes a nobody who never sees the daylight of ATPs ever again after a fluke run. I don't think he's that bad, but he's starting to show himself as a Daniel or Vassallo type. He's still young, so now is the time to establish himself, and live up to the hype and potential.

Re: Olek Dolgopolov Jr.

Well said, and Lorenzi is pretty much a nobody, but he has become a top 100 player the same way Dolgo did, by winning challengers.

But as you said, he is still young and let's hope this is a learning process, but it would be very well if he gets some ATP-wins to gain confidence. And he still has three months before his first points will drop off, so he has some chances on ATP-level by that time I guess. Let's evaluate some more then.

Meanwhile, maybe it would have been a better idea to play Tunis this week, instead of Rome qualis. So maybe one or two challengers, to get some rhytm and wins, combined with smaller ATP-events which he can enter directly.
