Oh man, what happened? Anyone see any substantial match reports? Milos is now provisionally ranked 16th BUT, Haas, Nishikori, Dolgopolov, and Querry can pass him with a win at Memphis. Actually, if Haas makes it to the final & loses to one of the other 3, then 2 players will pass him. And Wawrinka can tie him with a final appearance in Buenos Aries, pass him with a win. Whether Nadal actually plays IW or not may have a factor here, but Milos in in real danger of having to face one of the top-4 in round of 32 at IW & Miami! Yikes. And picking up serious points before clay season may be in jeopardy.
My mistake. Anywhere from 9-24 won't face top-4 until R16. So his real problem is if he doesn't get back into top-16 before Europe Clay season (where there are only 16 seeds for M1000's). So, at IW & Miami, if he were at say 17 or 18, that wouldn't matter that much IMHO. There are some pretty clear tiers right now in mens singles:
- the top-4 (assuming Nadal comeback is ok)
- the next-4
- the next 15-20 (there are some anomalies here, but for the most part, anyone in here on a good day can beat anyone else on a not-so-good day)
Whether Milos plays a 9-16 or a 17-24 is not that important in R16... eg. slumping Isner, Monaco, Simon are all probably easier matchups than Nishikori, Wawrinka, or Querry (assuming he recovers his form)
