- - Chevrolet cuts ties with Paradorn - -

source : Bangkok Post, January 13 2005

Chevrolet has terminated its 3 years sponsorship contract with tennis ace Paradorn Srichaphan saying the Thai player had never helped in the promotion of their company.

Sales manager of Chevy Asia said Paradorn had signed a 3 million-baht a year contract with Chevrolet. However he had never promoted Chevrolet but had instead has been linked to other motor companies.

John Thompson, sales manager of Chevrolet Asia, said they had tried to persuade Paradorn to promote Chevrolet while he was in Thailand, or at least use a Chevrolet car, but without success.

The final straw was apparently when Paradorn recently purchased a Ferrari.

Thompson said the termination of the contract was not linked to Paradorn's loss of form last season. He added that the company would continue to support Thai players but they must act in a professional manner.

-------------------------

What a sad news following his wrist injury that made him out of the Kooyong Classic. But still I find Paradorn and his team not professional enough. Tennis is his career (at least at the moment and years to come), sponsorship is really important. Chevrolet is one of the very first companies that offer him a great deal. Before he became this famous, he got Chevrolet Zafira, a very famous MPV in Thailand. Once he is a big name in the game, he bought Mercedes and Ferrari. He didn't realize how important this brand has meant to him. It's also a sponsor of Thailand Open.

Recently he also disappointed most Thai by donating 10,000 Baht (around 240 U.S. dollars)to the Tsunami victims in the southern part of the country. Then came critiques and comments like talk of the town about his donation. Many people said he has earned a lot but how could he do this ? Some said it's his money. Some said he lost big amount of money when buying a Ferrari. (While Tanasugarn did donate more than 100,000 Baht.) As a result Paradorn decided to add 1 million Baht to help Tsunami relief. This is what I call ,,unprofessional,, . I do not blame him about his donation at all because we should donate with heart. Big amount of money is not as much important as the intention. Support from both fans and sponsors is so important that he cannot forget.

I couldn't imagine what would happen if he is ranked below 30 or lower.
Come ON P' Bon , be more professional ! !

How is donating 1,000,000 Bt unprofessional? He assessed the damage and realized that he definitely should have donated more and he did. I can see the unprofessionalism when Paradorn didn't market Chevrolet more, but I dont see how you can call him unprofessional after a huge donation.

Please dont criticise one of the most polite and friendliest players on the circuit, Paradorn, at the end of the day, is only a Human being, who happens to play tennis for his job. Paradorn is a normal everyday guy who has not been turned into a zombie by his success. OK - he bought a Ferrari... he can afford it!!!! - if you could afford a ferrari - I bet you would get one too!!! - and he DID donate to the Tsunami appeal, dont find fault where it is not deserved.

My husband and I are some of the lucky people that Paradorn acknowledges every time (win, loose, draw, good times, bad times, inside tennis court, outside tennis arena) every time HE sees us. Please do not see bad things in this really nice genuine man that plays Tennis for a career.

Being a high profile celebrity/sports figure, Paradorn is open to many public criticisms whether they be legitimate or undeserved. Being such a prominent figure in the sport of tennis, let alone his native Thailand, Paradorn like many other famous persons gets placed in an intense spotlight. Everything he says and does gets scrutinized, misconstrued, overblown, whatever you want to call it. It just comes with the territory IMO.

As far as losing a sponsorship, I'm sure Paradorn could have been more loyal to Chevy, but what can you do when you have a thirst for high quality, top-end automobiles? On another subject...how serious is his wrist injury? Does anyone know the extent to which he is limited by this injury?

BTW...Paradorn won't get far in this years AO, if he wins his first two matches, he will lose to FedEx in the third round....Guaranteeeeed!

You know what I didn't mean that. I just wanted to share infos I have here as we are all his fans. I just feel like if I were him I would do something else like blood donation and donate some money without saying the exact amount. At first they said in TV that he donated 10,000 which was fine to me. But then people started to criticize him so he donated more. That is what I call unprofessional. It's unfair for both him and the victims because we should donate money with heart and intention. If he wanted to donate 100 Baht, you cannot blame him. It's his decision and his money. But when people criticize you, then you add more money. What for ? The victims don't want more money from Paradorn at all , believe me. Just knowing that he cares and feels for the damage, they are very pleased. He doesn't have to do what people want him to do. That's my point.

basil - I know he is a great guy without doubt.

All I wanna say is Thai people do expect too much from him and that will hurt him so much. I just want to share infos that you wouldn't like to hear from our country. Everything has two sides. Improvement is the key.

loner - the injury is fine now. Hopefully he could play up to his best at the Aussi open. Sadly he is in Roger's draw.

Hey Toppu thanks for the clarification. I understand what you're trying to say. It's a good point really. Anyways, good luck to Paradorn. One side of me is asking federer to lose before he plays paradorn, and the other side is asking both of them to reach the third round because only then will I see Paradorn on tv.
