His ranking at the time (before Wimbledon) was not high enough for entry to the master events and Olympics, so what tournaments he will play before USO?
I was in Düsseldorf yesterday where he was playing bundesliga for his team from aachen. He lost his match against Korolev 6:3 3:6 7:10. He should have played doubles later but that match was washed away by the rain.
After the match I was talking to him and Dirk for a few minutes. They are still hoping to enter the olympics. There is still a chance to get in. Otherwhise he might play the challenger in istanbul and then the US Open. Next weekende he wants to play bundesliga again.
Rainer got nominated by our NOC today!!! If he makes it onto the ITF acceptance list which is very very likely he will go to the Olympics!!!! Kiefer-Schüttler comeback on it's way!!!!

since Baghdatis and Ancic will not play I think Rainer is next alternate. If one of the following withdraws, he is in
Gremelmayr (not nominated by NOC)
Berrer (not nominated by NOC)
Ljubicic (torn leg muscle, very unlike that he will be fit)
Hewitt (hip injury, will decide on Tuesday)
Nalbandian (also injured but still hoping to be fit in time)
Monaco (recovering from pneumonia, wasn't fit enough for Toronto and Cincy)
Sela (not nominated by NOC)
Almagro (also injured for a long time already)
With Belgian norminating Rochus and Darcis, I think Rainer's chance is very slim. I don't think Nalby, Monaco and Almagro withdrawls will help because there are higher ranks Argentines and Spaniards to replace them.
I have to admit I have no idea how his chances of playing in Peking are now... (even though I've read lots of articles, some are sure he'll be allowed to play, some say he dosn't stand a chance...)
The problem here is, there are sooooo many rules and it depends on which rules to follow. In a way, the ITF "rules" sounds more like a guide line and NOC of each country basically has the ultimate control on who's to go and who's not.
And seriously, ITF's bark at Rainer is really not classy.
The problem is that the ITF didn't read the German criteria of the DOSB before. Gremelmayer and Berrer just didn't fulfill them that's why they can't play. Even if Schüttler hadn't called the CAS Berrer & Gremelmayer still wouldn't play because the DOSB didn't nominate them. So I really can't understand this reaction, looks as though the ITF doesn't know their own rules.
I read that Rainer got a message on his cell phone from Kiwi short after the CAS decision "Congrats, I hope we can play doubles!" And they wrote that he missed his first flight to Beijing and had to take one later instead  I hope he arrived meanwhile.
Generalsekretär Vesper versprach sogar, notfalls mit Teamkleidung auszuhelfen: "Er kriegt einen Anzug von mir, ich habe zwei." <--- lol It's nice how they all seem to be supporting Rainer <3
I am glad that he was able to go Especially because he and Kiwi won a medal last time. Would not be fair otherwise to me. After all Massu was giving a wild card as well.
I wrote that before Kohlschreiber announced that he withdraws. Of course now that he is out we will have Kiwi and Rainer in doubles!!!
