Re: 2011 College Tennis Regular Season - Pre-Season Rankings out!

The team rankings are basically the same as the end of the year rankings from last season. So we wont get the true measure of how good these teams are until a few weeks into the season.

Kei Nishikori, Donald Young, Somdev Devvarman, Dustin Brown, Steve Johnson, Yannick Maden
Robert Farah, Clement Reix, Alexander Dolgopolov, Nathan Thompson

How bout the Demon Deacons. They will gain a very good freshman from Poland for the Spring. One time

That's the wildcard. A lot of teasms are getting good talent from abroad for the spring semester. They are not ranked, but may be just as good as the ranked players. Only time will tell.

Re: 2011 College Tennis Regular Season - Pre-Season Rankings out!

My top 10. As Jeff said, the rankings could change vastly with players coming in in the Spring.

#1: Virginia - No surprise there. Too strong across the board.
#2: USC - I think Ecuadorian Freshman Emilio Gomez will be the difference maker for the Trojans. He has a career-high ATP ranking in the 500's and adds depth ad firepower to the USC line-up behind Steve Johnson. I think Gomez has tons of potential and will grow into what Robert Farah was in his senior season. Watch out for this kid. The Trojans may run into a loss or two in the season but by April and May, they will be tough to beat.
#3: Tennessee - Williams, Smith, Sandgren is a front 3 that most teams won't be able to beat. Yes, even Virginia.
#4: Texas - Texas is my surprise team. With Andersen, Corrie, and Damico improving tremendously and gaining experience on the Futures tour this summer, they will lead a scary good 2009 recruiting class (ranked #3) that has developed another year.
#5: Ohio State - Amazing depth the Buckeyes have added behind Buchanan. Inexperience may hurt them in May.
#6: UCLA - UCLA will be a very dangerous team to play in May with 3 fiesty seniors, Inbar, Seguso, and Meister, who will lead a great freshman class.
#7: Duke - Duke is a very dangerous team. If their freshman can play at a high level, watch out.

Re: 2011 College Tennis Regular Season - Pre-Season Rankings out!

I will have to say yes. They have been building their program for years and this is their strongest team ever. They will take a step back next year. They still must prove that they can win in the NCAA late stages. They have yet to even make a national title match despite being so dominant during the regular season.

This year they have beefed up the schedule. The ACC is very good but aside from Virginia does not have elite teams(Duke is rising to the elite level). So it leaves them susceptible to teams like USC and Tennessee. I would not bet against UVA, even though a match with USC in the NCAA's could be bad for them. The 3 California school are the only ones I could see beating UVA in the NCAA's because it is in Palo Alto this year and those teams know how to win when it is all on the line.

But with Domijian added to the line-up, who is already one of the nation's top players, the experience of Shabaz and Singh and the deadly depth, UVA will take home the national title this season.

Virginia would be even a bit better if Raonic ended up there, as he almost did

Re: 2011 College Tennis Regular Season - #9 Florida def. #7 Baylor 5-2!

In the first all top 10 match of the season #9 Florida beats #7 Baylor 5-2. Gators won the doubles point followed by straight set wins by #9 Lacroix at 1, Slilam at 4 and Butz at 6.

#5 Texas squeaked a 4-3 win out against #23 Michigan on the road, 4-3. #18 Ed Corrie got beat at #1 by #95 Evan King, and #25 Jason Jung of Michigan beat Jean Andersen of Texas, but surprisingly (to me) Texas' 3-5 spots and a doubles sweep was enough to avoid an upset in Ann Arbor.

#23 Georgia Tech beat #56 South Carolina easily on the road, 6-1, with #4 Gomez winning big.

#1 Virginia, #14 Duke, #12 Kentucky, #13 Louisville all get a pair of wins this weekend.

Cunha beat Elon's #1 76 62 and did not play vs. NC Central. He and Carleton (#12 team) also won in doubles 8-4. He's ranked #9 in singles

Indiana up 3-2. This would be a massive upset if they can pull out 1 of the remaining two matches.
