Strange choice of tournament considering there's three clay court events next week?
Is this a serious comeback? Any news on his plans, etc.?
its hard to say what would be a 'strange choice' for guille at this point in his career
He has won THREE matches since 2006. he has not exactly had great results on clay, he probably wants a clean slate. the last time he did well enough to make the finals of an event, it was hard court.
hard court will give him an even bounce and won't require AS much confidence in long rallies, the way clay does with long grueling points. he will be encouraged to try to end the point a little earlier. this could spark the aggression in his game; he cant afford to come back a 'purely defensive' player, as he had begun to be in the 'comeback' of 2006.
then if he gains the confidence and comfort level during real match play, he'll be ready to draw on this experience back onto clay. remember, he has played only TWENTY matches since JULY 2006... now in 2009... he is as cold as you can be coming into tournament play; zero-tournament toughness. hard court is a good idea.
