Re: Week 46: Champaign IL, USA [Entry List]
OK, quick update. Nishikori served 7 DFs in the first set alone, and had three breaks of serve to Guccione's two in the first set (yes, you read that right). The second set was played on serve, and Nishikori hit what looked like an easy lob to go back and smash that Guccione let go over him with little effort to get the break in the eight game.
Two things on Guccione: his serve is amazing (great variety with awesome kicks, slices, pace, etc.), while his volleys are rather woeful as you surely know (he also lets lobs go by him that are shocking with his size). The oddest thing about him to me is his body language though. He never shows the slightest bit of emotion, and just sort of slumps around the court almost as if he's depressed. Even leaving the facility he just took his time leaving with his head down before carefully putting his stuff in the trunk and being driven off.
I have been to A LOT of challengers across this country, and Guccione is without a doubt the most type C personality that I have ever witnessed play this game. It is really kind of cool to watch such a type C play this game, but there are times that you just want to say "Damn it man, snap to!!" as well.
Andrew Anderson went 0-8 on BPs on the first two games of Delic's serve in the 2nd set (which were both insanely long), and that was that. Delic had a nice little crowd watching him (he is a former U of I player) and there were a few solid rallies, but I would rate the quality of play incredibly poor compared to the average challenger match out there.
