I wouldn't say so. Actually I remember him coming on the scene in the indoor hard challengers back in 2006/07, something like that. He won some 100K+ challengers back then, Bratislava included if I remember correctly. And later he had good results in Vienna / Basel etc.
He is not a harcourter of course, but he used to have a good speed and timing and could play indoors, like f.e. Clement, who in reality and style-wise is still closer to clay than to hard
Clement has compact groundstrokes, takes the ball early, returns aggressively, and a serve helped by fast courts.
His style is not like Bolelli's and it's not more suited to clay than hard.
