Europe/Africa Zone Group II 1R: Latvia at Greece (March 4-6, 2011)

We'll lose for sure even if Gulbis doesn't play, but at least we are finally back in Group II after that horrendous choke against Monaco and then the loss to Hungary with our "B" team and then when we had to forfeit some ties in 2009 because all of our players got injured

The only confirmed player for this tie is Paris Gemouchidis, because he won the National Championships. The rest of the team will probably be Economidis, Angelinos, and Jakupovic

We will probably play on hard, and if it's outdoor then Athens or Rhodes, and indoor can be pretty much anywhere since there are so many indoor sports halls all around Greece...

Marcos Baghdatis Forever!

Through the good and the bad, always my #1, no matter what the rankings say

nice thread, will follow it for sure.

I doubt Gulbis will play this tie so your team obviously have chances

btw, is it possible to play outdoors in March? I've never been to Greece

Why wouldn't Gulbis play? Did he mention this somewhere? He did play against Poland last September. As of the surface, no idea which one would favour the Greeks most. If you say hard, I believe you. I think Athens would be the most sensible choice, I wouldn't mind flying for a nice DC weekend to Rhodes though (even in march)

Re: Europe/Africa Zone Group II: Latvia @ Greece

well he didn't play first round matches in last few years and preferred to prepare for Masters series tournaments in USA (Indian Wells & Miami) instead of DC

And the tie against Poland was totally different Latvia was hosting and Ernest was the home star there

@Nadie: In some parts of Greece yes. In Athens they probably could, but the players might have to wear long sleeves and it would be chilly out so probably more people would go if they put it indoors

And we only sent 3 people in 2009, and two of them (Jakupovic and Kleftakos) got injured . We lost 3-0 to Estonia (two retirements in singles and a walkover in doubles), and we didn't even play against Turkey because we only had one healthy player

Re: Europe/Africa Zone Group II: Latvia @ Greece

As for the venue, I'm sure it will be announced soon, but it can be pretty much anywhere in Greece because indoor sports (especially basketball) are very popular in Greece so there are tons of venues and basically anywhere can host it, even Santorini as they just built a new arena and the capacity isn't much but it has over 1,000 seats which is more than enough for a Group II tie and there are tons of empty hotels there in March

Rhodes could be another option, with a lot of sights to see and they have a 1,600 seat tennis stadium as well as 2 or 3 indoor arenas and they have a lot of empty hotels in March

I hope they pick a random place in Greece so that Gulbis doesn't go because if it is on an island or something, then he might come

Re: Europe/Africa Zone Group II: Latvia @ Greece

The dumb Greek federation chose outdoor clay in Thessaloniki
We have no chance on clay, and outdoors in early March in Northern Greece?

Here is some info in Thessaloniki weather. The players will have to wear sweaters...

The only chance we had was for Economidis to play singles and then win in doubles, but it seems that Eco is only playing doubles
