Post Hopman Cup

here's an article I found:

Philippoussis touches down for cup
Tuesday December 28, 07:02 PM

Mark Philippoussis is so far letting his racquet do all the talking as he prepares to farewell his own "annus horribilis".

The much-discussed 28-year-old quietly touched down in Perth and has so far politely refused requests by the media for interviews before playing for Australia in the Hopman Cup.

Philippoussis took to the court for a gruelling 90-minute hit with Italian David Sanguinetti in sweltering conditions after organisers failed to turn on the air conditioning in the Burswood Dome.

The temperature outside soared to 35 degrees.

Sweating profusely afterwards, Sanguinetti was impressed with the way Philippoussis had struck the ball.

"I enjoy always hitting with him and always have fun, but today I didn't have too much fun because of the heat," Sanguinetti said.

"He (Mark) served OK, I didn't think he was serving his best, but I think he is saving his shoulder for the tournament. But I thought he played pretty good."

Desperate to revive his lowly world ranking of 109, Philippoussis pairs with Alicia Molik in the mixed teams event which begins on January 1.

Australia, seeded six, begins against the Slovak Republic team of Daniela Hantuchova and Dominik Hrbaty on January 3.

With so much media interest on his off-court activities, chiefly for the break-up of his relationship with singer Delta Goodrem, Sanguinetti put Philippoussis's form slump down to more mundane reasons.

"I think he is playing the groundstroke a little bit better than recent years - I don't know what happened last year, he didn't have a great year," he said.

"(Today) he was in the court very often, sometimes last year and the year before he was hitting too hard, he wants to hit the ball too hard. Today he was hitting smarter.

"I still think he is one of the best players on the tour."

The hero of two Australian Davis Cup triumphs, Philippoussis won just 11 matches in a wretched 2004 season, to leave world No.3 Lleyton Hewitt the lone Australian in the men's top 100.

Ranked eighth at the start of the season, Philippoussis lost in 13 opening-round matches and flattered to deceive at the four majors, reaching the fourth round at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
