Surrounded, battle-weary and exhausted, the Germans faced death or captivity. Captivity meant almost certain death. That is quite an elaborate way to say "You are fucked".
There is a trilogy on the Battle of Stalingrad by David Glantz:
To the Gates of Stalingrad: Soviet-German Combat Operations, April-August 1942 http://www.amazon.com/Gates-Stalingr...697023-3026836
Armageddon in Stalingrad: September-November 1942 (The Stalingrad Trilogy, Volume 2) http://www.amazon.com/Armageddon-Sta.../dp/0700616640
AFTER STALINGRAD: The Red Army's Winter Offensive 1942-1943 http://www.amazon.com/AFTER-STALINGR...697023-3026836
I have not read any of it but saw an extensive interview of Glantz. I have read "When Titans clashed" about WW II on the Eastern Front.
