Re: AO R3: Jeremy Chardy stuns Juan Martin Del Potro(6) 6-3 6-3 6-7(3) 3-6 6-3

This result is explained by two key reasons: Del Potro wasn't injured but he was seriously lacking in energy out there; whether it was because of the extreme heat or just one of those days where you don't feel so well I don't know, but his shots lacked their usual power on a consistent power, he was just literally pushing with very little power for long stretches; and without his power, Delpo is a very average player or at least not a top player at all. Conversely, Chardy is a really good player on those days where his shots are actually landing in, which was the case last night. In fact, it is only due to his known mental shortcomings that he didn't routine Del Potro in easy 3 sets yesterday.

For Del Potro, he'll be upset for having lost but he fought very well in a day where he was thoroughly outplayed, in all sets. I believe going forward it's better to exit the tournament like this - 2 legitimately great performances and then one bizarrely lackasidical one - than like in the USO (four average matches before losing to Nole). At least he has something to build on for the rest of the season, which could still be very good. Onwards and upwards.

As for Chardy, he should be happy he got such a huge win and chance to reach quarters but very worried at the same time; this is a match he should have won in routine 3 sets given what happened on court and yet he almost let Delpo take a match where he (Chardy) was vastly superior in all sets. Looking forward to a possible QF with Murray (if he beats Seppi), Chardy has the weapons to make life very difficult for Murray for sure, but he won't get away with today's (and his trademark) unclutchness. Murray is a much stronger physical specimen than Del Potro, regardless of any conditions you can't expect to have such an unenergetic performance out there.
