This will sound weird, but where are the black people?
The film is ultimately about Lincoln, and the end of slavery, but to have the film dominated by white people is not a good representation of what would actually have been the case.
There were no black representatives or senators or members of the government. Douglas was the most prominent black man of the time and he conferred in person with Lincoln only a few tines.
I take it that they aren't showing females in the congress either
What´s more, the congress jumped in outrage at the mention of the theoretical possibility women get the vote. How much things have changed in the last century.
I know my history. MY history, Portugal and Europe. And that is why I feel.ignorant, because I normally don't feel like I have a knowledge gap in history
Well, as star said there is no necessity for us Europeans to know the ins and outs of US history. Besides, this is a good movie to introduce yourself to the subject
I think people shoul have a grasp of world history. I have a better understanding of English history than other European history. Probably French Russian and German in that order. I like Chinese history a lot but it is quite a task. I'm really ignorant of Indian history except for colonial history. I read history all the tie but I'm not sure how much sticks in my head. I need quizzes after each book.
star, it took me three years in junior high to go through the basics of each dynasty in Chinese history. Almost each dynasty is longer than US history.
You known What bothers me? I have been doing all my traveling around Europe, so I know What I am seeing, I understand it. But going to Russia, I am familiar with the history but.not comfortable, or China, I know nothing about it. It feels wrong.
Agreed. Yet I must say that the dialogue, the very real way in which human emotion was portrayed in this film is what I liked most about it. I think I might rewatch once I´ve read up on the historical background of this period.
Medieval history has always been my favorite. But now in my latter years I have done more reading in u.s.history. As a student I never liked the civil war or anything after 1815. I did have a morbid fascination with the holocaust so I read every thing available there. Now I will read nearly anything I can find about anything. Books about wwII and the civil war are more plentiful. There are some great biographies on Catherine and Peter the great out now. I liked the Catherine one best.
Tsarist Russia, can´t go wrong with that My own tastes are rather similar to yours I must say, minus the penchant for US history. Did your fascination for the holocaust simply fizzle out because you were over-satiated with books on the subject or were there other reasons?
Good film, but it kind of frustrated me a little bit.
