He's not stupid in scheduling. He needs to play every MM event he can because that's the only way he can keep his inflated ranking for as long as possible.
I probably shouldn't reply to this. But in any case, if ATP 250/500 events were non-countable, Ferrer would still be ranked where he is now. And no, his ranking doesn't give him any advantage over the other members of the top 8.

Ferrer is 1000 points ahead of Berdych in the rankings. If you subtract Bastad and Kuala Lumpur (which are non-countable anyways), he's still ahead. If you subtract countable Buenos Aires, he's still ahead
without Bastad and Buenos Aires, he'd still be ahead of Del Po in the YTD race, too.
