Actually, the Indians were often much better armed than the U.S. military. Because they used the most modern weapons they had traded for or captured and the soldiers were stuck with the lowest bidder for the weapons contacts. Arguably, the worst defeat of U.S. forces fighting Indians at the Little Bighorn was not only the huge numerical difference, but repeating Winchester's vs. single-shot Springfield's that the cavalry used. As was the case for much of the Indian Wars. Of course, it would have been a forgotten skirmish in the Civil War. It was the lack of a large-scale mobilization that allowed the Indian threat to exist as long as it did.
