In the Final of the Athens Open
New victory for Economidis - Jakupovic
Konstantinos Economidis, Alexander Jakupovic today defeated Martin Slanar (Austria), Igor Zelenay (Slovakia) 6-4, 4-6 (11-9) and on a cold day rekindled hopes that Greek players may make it to the finals of the 75,000-dollar ÁÔP Challenger “Status Athens Open” tournament, held at the Athens Lawn Tennis Club facilities.
The Greek duo put up an excellent performance in the first set, winning 6-4. In the second set, with a break in the seventh game, they led the way 4-3 but did not win in the end. Slanar, Zelenay, seeded No. 3, came in strongly at tie-break, leading 5-1 and 7-2. Economidis, Jakupovic saved two match-points at 9-7 and won the match 11-9.
“We should have finished the game in the second set. At tie-break we took advantage of the mistakes our opponents made. The fans greatly helped us to reverse the score. Now that we’re here, our next aim can only be to get to the finals,” said the two Greek champs.
At the semifinals on Saturday afternoon, Economidis, Jakupovic are to play against the winners of the Bart Beks (Netherlands), Matwe Middelkoop (Netherlands) – Leonardo Azzaro (Italy), Daniel Munoz (Spain) match.
At the singles quarterfinals today: Denis Istomin (Uzbekistan) defeated Ivaylo Traykov (Bulgaria) 7-6, 6-2; Marc Lopez (Spain) defeated Ivo Klec (Slovakia) 6-3, 6-1; Adrian Cruciat (Romania) defeated Michail Elgi
