Re: Federer - Djokovic similarities (Djokovic is having his 'Fed 2005' year)

In many ways, Federer's 2005 was his best year as far as overall play is concerned along with 2006. Federer's BH was better in 2006, but Federer's FH was more potent in 2005. Federer's 2005 and McEnroe's 1984 are really the closest anyone has come to being undefeated.

AO loss to Safin: Federer held match points and won more points than Safin in the match.

MC loss to Gasquet: Federer held match point and won more points than Gasquet in the match.

RG loss to Nadal: clear cut loss although Federer did lead 3-1 in the 4th set.

TMC lost to Nalbandian: Led two sets to none, and then came back to 6-5, 30-0 in the fifth set.

So, in his four defeats, he could have easily won three of them. He had some close victories as well, but his none of his opponents won more points than he did in a match that Federer won, nor did they hold match point against him. He did have close wins that could have gone either way against Ljubicic and Ferrero and there was that come from behind win against Nadal in Miami.
