Yeah, you were right to make the point about altitude...if the ball travels a little quicker through the air it would surely help Mardy and Sam.

Nevertheless, as you say this is red clay, and you cannot be too confident that Fish and Querrey will get the right results on it.

Edit - 6 breaks of serve in 8 games so far in the 1st set. If Fish can get his act together he will surely get chances to take a proper lead in the match...Falla gets tight in virtually any situation.

Fish broken again

Honestly, I'm not worried about Querrey in the slightest. He can play some very good tennis on red clay and with the altitude his serve will be huge.

Fish, on the other hand...

Falla-Fish 2-2 in the third set, 0-15 and the scoreboard is stuck for a while now. Maybe there is some rain over there.

Guess the scoreboard is broken. It's 4-4 on serve in the 3rd set.

Falla isn't even remotely close to the player I saw at Wimbledon or the French against Roger. He's essentially no better than any random clay challenger player you see, with periodic points where he shows a good level. I can't believe how poor he is.

Mardy is making so many errors, he is in complete control of this match and whenever he can sustain a decent level for an extended period he will win this match.

They are both playing awfully. Falla is an ATP level player but a very inconsistent one at that.

Also, Falla is a horrible player under pressure. You're really seeing that today. The fans are for him but they are probably unnerving him more than they are Fish.

Thanks. Fish broke Fallas's serve, will try to serve it out for the third set at 5-4.

Fish is a awful clay court player and every half decent ATP tour, even some Challenger players would destroy him, but at least you need to have the guts to do it, Falla doesn't have what it takes.

Agreed. I was thinking earlier that some up and coming clay-courters that are playing futures right now would easily beat either of these guys today.

Some of the mistakes those two are making are just plain ridiculous, especially Falla. I mean, you are playing in front of your own fans, for your country, and at least you should push yourself to fight, but he, wow...in the last game he basically through the ball at the bottom of the net on few occasions, those are mistakes that some juniors wouldn't make. I think even Fish is wondering how the heck is he leading this match, based on what he showed on clay throughout his career.

For sure about Falla under pressure, story of his career. Never been one to thrive under the pressure. Weak mental game. Always gets tight in big moments. But this tennis we're seeing from his is absolutely shocking. He is absolutely horrible in all facets today. I literally cannot believe what I'm seeing. No footwork, absolutely nothing on any of his shots or serve, he's doing nothing.

Also, I'm not sold on him being a real top 100 player. He's been in the top 100 a few times now, and just like he may this year, has fallen out every time. He puts in too many performances like this. He also doesn't have a forceful enough game. He does a lot of things well but nothing on a high enough level. His second serve is an embarrassment especially. If you are weak mentally and you don't have the game to make up for it with lots of winners and the like, you are going to be in trouble.

Mardy isn't playing well but he has weapons, and he has more confidence. We'll see if either can step up their games.
