This is the tie people really need to look out for. The Kazakhs have a pretty decent chance at winning here. If they can end day one 1-1, I think it's very 50-50. Golubev has been bad of late and is more of a clay court player, so Marco should beat him, and the tie result may hinge on it. Switzerland is the favorite but an upset is possible.

Stan probably is going to have to win three matches to get the Swiss back in the world group. I do think the Swiss can win the doubles. Stan should beat Kuku, but it's beating Golubev that will be a problem. Marco just isn't reliable or good enough on this big stage.

I thought Marco would win due to how Golubev has been playing lately and how he's been playing on quicker courts but I was really wrong.

Stan isn't really 100% fit and is playing this mostly out of necessity. Hopefully he wins but it looks like it could be a long match, which is not what he nor the Swiss needed.

Re: World Group 2010 play-offs: Switzerland at Kazakhstan (September 17-19, 2010)

Stan had quite a few openings in that fifth set to get it back on serve and didn't capitalize. I don't want Kazakhstan to beat the Swiss, because I want the Swiss in the WG, but at the same time this is sort of karma in Roger's sense that he doesn't help his team out when they need him, and Stan's injured, and they are on the road against a good team. I can only imagine what Roger thinks or even if he cares.
