Robin Söderling had a tougher start to the Roland Garros than many had expected. But after 2 hours and 17 minutes was the victory with 7-6, 7-6, 6-2 against Kevin Kim, USA.
"I think he is considerably better than his ranking. He plays flat and love to play with my speed," says Söderling.
American played tough and kept pace with Söderling tempo terms, and he had the lead in both the first and second set but the Swede came back both times and won tiebreaken quite convincing.
- It was tough and hard when it's this passport hot and humid, notes Söderling and continue ...
- Completely different from in Düsseldorf last week. And also different from this last year when it was wetter and the balls behave slightly different, which suits me better.
Game-wise he points out again that the more typical gravel players fit him better than the play types that Kim does. And today was the American a period in which he played successfully with very small margins.
- I have not counted line matches but it was a gang. He strikes so flat that you can read the text on the ball throughout the track ball but he has more trouble when I can roll up to, for instance, his backhand.
And he was pleased with the result but perhaps not so happy with the game.
- I know that I can wake up another day and play much better but I am glad I could turn both sets but to play well and it is exactly this kind of games we talked about the need to win, he rounded.
The next opponent will be Denis Istomin as Söderling has no eye on but coach Magnus Norman were probably out to see the last set of Uzbekiern and on Wednesday tactic clear.
30-0 serving for third set to go up 2 sets to 1 over the clay court king.
