Re: Support driven by looks?

The tour and the media also tend to promote players that are perceived as good looking. So there is a feedback effect, with good-looking players getting more promotion which attracts more fans, which generates more promotion and so on. I think the effect is more pronounced on WTA though.

Exactly. Sadly we are all susceptible to beauty and respond to people differently depending on their looks. A very pretty woman or man gets more attention and help in all sorts of situations from the opposite sex and even members of the same sex feel nervous and awkward (or inferior) in their presence. Not to mention that very often, having that advantage gives a lot of confidence to these people which makes them seem bolder and even more attractive.

Re: Support driven by looks?

There are just a lot of good looking tennis players that are playing now.
It isn't their fault that they happen to be good-looking

I'm a shallow girl, that's why I only cheer for the guys who are good-looking in my eyes.

Re: Support driven by looks?

Let us just say it is easier on the eyes too watch SHARAPOVA and IVANOVIC than it is too watch MAURESMO and CLIJSTERS.

But champions, in the end will attract the people. Look at Roger; him and his fugly smile has a cut following

Yes, but they have to be good as well.
Good looking means nothing if they do not play well.

So Roger's finally a champion ? Keep the nice job man you're on the tracks

Back to topic, I couldn't care less about how a player looks, I am a tennis fan, I am thrilled when I watch brilliant shots, if I would look at some hotties I wouldn't stick to a tennis court...

Re: Support driven by looks?

I support Roddick because of his game (or more his intensity and stupidity which makes him sort of an underdog in my eyes). And I don't think he's a sexy beast, I think there are times when he looks like a dead man, some walking ghoul.

BUT, I am heavily biased on the women's department. Women who look like men don't appeal to me; i dont watch them play. And women who screech every time they hit the ball don't appeal to me either; i also don't watch them play. SO...i don't watch women's tennis.

I've been intrigued by Marat's incredible fan support for years.

You said your poll is meant to be a joke, but I think you've raised a good question here and hopefully there will be some decent responses. And yes, I know that since I have that guy in my avatar, I may not be taken seriously, but JMG's looks are secondary to me. I'm just as fond of Justin and no one has ever asked him to pose for a swimsuit photo spread.
Fee, if you want a serious response, I wouldn't be a Marat fan for that long without his incredible breath taking tennis flashes of which he still shows from time to time, and without his intricate personality. His looks come after that. And I do criticize his bad behaviour (arguing and racket smashing) but still love the person (or what I know of him, of course). I know he's not an angel and supporting an angel would be kinda boring for me.
About his wide fan support, I think he has this something called charisma maybe that draws many people to him.
I'm 36 and I don't over players.

That's what I was going to post - both the ATP and WTA promote the sport through the sex appeal of players - the WTA in particular. Look at tennis 'mags' such as Ace, who have their 'sexiest player list' every year. A player's good looks can be part of the appeal of why fans like them - but I doubt it would be the main reason fans liked a player.

I think for me the most talented of all times was (Marcelo) Rios. Marat Safin, 2004

Marcelo has an enormous talent. Gaudio, RG champion 2004

"Rios ... he has a beautiful game, great forehand and great touch," Federer, World number 1

Guillermo Coria: "Ríos and Vilas are my two idols"

Re: Support driven by looks?

I like Stepanek, Lendl, Koubek, Snobel, Mantilla and Muster cause of their looks, well 99 percent of it anyway.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Its the opposite for me. Mauresmo and Clijsters are easier on the eyes due to the way the y play tennis which is more interesting than they way the other two play IMO, especially Mauresmo with her volleys and one-handed backhand. I dont care too much about looks.
