Battle of the Sexes 2014 Edition

On the September 20, 1973 a 55 year old Bobby Riggs played Billie Jean King at Houston Astrodome, in a match billed as The Battle of the Sexes. King beat Riggs, 6–4, 6–3, 6–3 for the $100,000 winner-take-all prize. (Although much speculation exists to suggest Riggs threw he match to pay off his gambling debts)

As John McEnroe is now the same age as Bobby Riggs was when he played BJK what do people think the score would be if he played a best of 5 set indoor match against say Serena Williams.

Re: Battle of the Sexes 2014 Edition

Against the best players of the ATP champions tour, Roddick, Enqvist, Moya etc, Serena would get slaughtered.

As for McEnroe I don't know how much he plays these days but at 55 it's definitely a major challenge IF both players give everything they got and I got no doubt Serena would. I think Serena would likely beat McEnroe, Borg and a few other old champions. In a best of 5 if Serena didnt have one of her bad days it could easily end 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. If she had one of her bad days 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, 1-6 with the decider being 50/50.

Maybe the best matchup would be a guy like Edberg who is 48 now and in great shape. Could be a really close match with a few tiebreak sets. Men around 45-50 would be the perfect matchup imo. Men around 35-40 are still too strong and no disrespect to the old veterans but at 50+ the speed and movement tends to drop off fast and even if they had the right tactics, feel and skills I think Serena's power would be too much because she is indeed very powerful for a WTA player.

Re: Battle of the Sexes 2014 Edition

I think it all depends on how Serena approaches the match, against someone like McEnroe she can be a bit patient and win, but someone younger she has to go in or out, play first strike tennis, then she will have a shot of winning at least a few games.

I think Serena would win by a similar scoreline as BJK

McEnroe would expose Serena's movement.

Edberg would beat Serena, easily IMO. Not so sure about McEnroe.

McEnroe would win pretty comfortably unless he was impeded in some way.

Re: Battle of the Sexes 2014 Edition

Just let Djokovic play Silliams and let this 'battle of the sexes' be settled once and for all. It will also help several WTA tards to get over their delusion and start living in the real world.

Djokovic let Li Na beat him, can't be trusting him with a tennis saving mission like this.

Re: Battle of the Sexes 2014 Edition

99% of people already know someone like Djokovic would double bagel her.

It would be funnier to have some mug ranked #1000 do it.

Re: Battle of the Sexes 2014 Edition

in the King/Riggs match, she was able to use the doubles alley and riggs had only one serve?

or this is a myth?
