Good, as that means we don't have to listen to him being called Sir.

Yet.

They should have special awards for Olympic athletes. I don't think someone should be made a Sir or Dame (or any of the other awards) just because they won a gold medal at the Olympics. These awards should be for a lifetime of achievement and service not just something you do in one year.

Re: Andy Murray OBE! Disgraceful it should have been a knighthood!

I agree with the OP. He should at least be a CBE. But I think partly it's about career, and Wiggins does have 7 Olympic medals...

However if Murray does not get a knighthood upon retirement or before then it will be a genuine disgrace.

Andy Murray

Gilles Simon - Juan Martin del Potro - Grigor Dimitrov

Pablo Andujar - Philipp Petzschner - David Ferrer - Mikhail Youzhny - Simone Bolelli

Julien Benneteau - Juan Monaco - Tommy Haas - Gianluigi Quinzi - Tommy Robredo - Guido Pella - Lleyton Hewitt

Re: Andy Murray OBE! Disgraceful it should have been a knighthood!

A few of points.

1. He will almost certainly get a knighthood in the future, especially if he wins Wimbledon

2. Only two sportsman got Knighthoods. One was Ben Ainslie who has won Gold at four consecutive Olympic Games. The other was Bradley Wiggins who has won Gold at three consecutive Olymipcs and won the Tour de France which is the undoubted pinnacle of cycling. In both cases the knighthood reflects their career achievements not just what they did this year. Furthermore both had received a "lesser" awards earlier in their career. Wiggins got an OBE in 2005 and the a CBE in 2009 while Ainslie got an MBE in 2001, and OBE in 2005 and a CBE in 2009.

3. These awards are decided by a committee not the personal whim of the Queen.

agreed.

I think sportsmen/women should get these awards after their career. Sir Steve Redgrave for example getting his upon retirement, same with the most successful olympic sailor ever Ben Ainsle.

Murray wins Wimbledon 2016 after Djokovic is blue shelled by Querrey. Thanks Querrey!

The people who got Knighthoods have all had hugely successful careers.

Wiggins, numerous golds and other medals over 3 olympics, now including winner of the TDF and many other prestigious cycling races over his career.

Ainsile - 4 time Gold medal winner over 4 olympics

Sarah Storey - Can't even count how many golds shes won in cycling and swimming..

People, please understand the whole career before passing judgement. These people aren't just suddenly winning everything, they've worked so hard since you even heard of them.

I think it's OK, it leaves him room for improvement.

Wimbledon will surely bring him a CBE and his activity post retirement( training pupils, charity, etc...) will bring him a KBE, imo....

I guess I was referring more to Murray. Seems to me a bit early in his career to be making him a Sir or already penciling in a future Knighthood. I mean how many people in their 20s are awarded Dames and Knightoods anyway? I would guess not many, if any, outside of Olympic athletes. I mean look how long it took Bruce Forsyth to get one yet Andy Murray should get one at 25? No.

Re: Andy Murray OBE! Disgraceful it should have been a knighthood!

You don't get knighted at 25 years old.

That's fact, they don't give out knighthoods to people in the prime of their career if you look at the honours all the people getting the higher honours are in their 30's or older.

When have you ever seen someone being knighted in their mid 20's?

Even if Murray wins Wimbledon although it would all but guarantee him a Knighthood it still wouldn't officially happen until near the end of his career.

Re: Andy Murray OBE! Disgraceful it should have been a knighthood!

Knighthood is too early for Muzza and Jess Ennis but it has to be there somewhere down the line. If Murray beefs up his slam tally he is a shoe in.

Sir Andrew Murray. Something completely unique in Tennis Something Federer and Djokovic will never have.

As for Nadal, no doubt he'll get the Spanish equivalent though, which is way cooler than a simple knighthood, similar to the one given to Del Bosque.

THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS, THE MARQUIS OF VICENTE DEL BOSQUE.

THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS,THE MARQUIS OF Rafael Nadal.

Nothing, nothing tops that title. I have tears in my eyes just thinking about that. And unlike a knighthood, it's actually a hereditary noble title and it honours a lifetime accomplishment. And tennis wise Nadal has done enough to deserve it even if he were to call it a day today. (he could perhaps throw in a Nadal tennis academy but he has already done enough).

There an only be One Nadal

Re: Andy Murray OBE! Disgraceful it should have been a knighthood!

Look at Ben Ainslie he had to work his way to Knighthood, they don't just hand them out to young people.

2001 - MBE
2005 - OBE
2009 - CBE
2012 - Knight

Murray would probably get a CBE in a year or two if he wins another Slam and then Knighthood in his early 30's, Murray didn't even get an MBE he just jumped straight to OBE.
