PS3: Driesstyle

Don't play much, when I did, lost to Lenders 7-5 in a fifth set tiebreak. Haven't dared to start TS4 up since

Re: Top Spin 4 Video game anyone?

I'm such a mess at TS4. Ever since the upgrade. Urgh. I can't even win games off the IA anymore. Nobody wants to play online against me cause I'm the e-version of the most useless player on the ATP tour.

Nalbandian/Davydenko/Berdych/Gulbis/Nadal rock, the rest is more or less sucky.

Re: Top Spin 4 Video game anyone?

I'm in a Smash Court Tennis 2 phase now.

I honestly wish the Players Council would get something together where a game could have 50-70 top players in it. Having 8 pros to play as doesn't do tennis justice.

Have you tried Tennis Elbow? Not perfect, but its gameplay is the best of any I've tried.

Re: Top Spin 4 Video game anyone?

Bumping this old thread.

Anyone else get really into this game? I hold my finger up when I think the ball is out. Typically when I'm glued to the screen

If you have an issue with a report/infraction, a user, a moderator or just want to talk, PM me.

I support Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Del Potro.

Why? Because I love tennis plain and simple

Absolutely try Tennis Elbow. Download Sam's Patch (or something similar) and you'll have the whole tour, all the players for the last twenty years. It looks great when you play on high def 2d courts, and the animations can actually be better than Top Spin 4 (they butchered Federer's serve there for example).

Gameplay, most importantly, is also far better. For example, I could routinely beat Federer 0-0-0 on the secret extra difficult setting in Top Spin 4 but it was incredibly tedious to take points off Murray and Simon due to the programmers increasing the difficulty by letting opponents know where you're hitting the ball, where you're going to be, etc. This obviously benefits pushers, but it does not a realistic game make. Tennis Elbow makes it suitably difficult to take sets off of players like Sampras and Federer while still making Nadal and Djokovic just as difficult to beat but requiring different tactics.

And it's only $20!

That's an impressive plug there.

How's the animation in Tennis Elbow? Do the players still glide across the court like they're skiing?

No, some French guy did. I just love it and only came across it by accident on Youtube. It deserves more visibility, certainly more than Top Spin 4. That used to be my tennis video game, but only because everything else I knew about was terrible or arcadey. I'm amazed that game design studios with massive resources at their disposal do such a piss poor jobs with a relatively simple game to code. It's just updated Pong, right?

Still, was the 'only $20!' a little over the top?

To leng jai:
Animation in Tennis Elbow is a mixed bag. It's a very low-budget game, but it's mod-able. With the right mods, serve motions and groundstrokes are very accurate for even minor players (much more accurate than Top Spin 4, as I mentioned above). Movement doesn't look great, but you're focused on the ball then and it never takes me out of the game.

how is the online play, do a lot of people participate in it? Is it like a lobby or do you need a direct connection to people?

I don't do online play, as I've only had the game a few months and I'm not confident enough to go online and face the experts. But there's a hardcore online community. I believe you can make direct connections, but I know there are organized tournaments. Here's a video montage of the kind of play you'd encounter (not my video btw, all the courts and player animations are available as free mods, music isn't part of the actual game, and the rally length is probably because the controls settings aren't set at the most demanding level): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU93Bi24Leg

Edit: Just for clarification, the names on the score graphic are for the users, not the players they're using on the court. There are no licensing issues once the game is fully modded.

To be honest I was kind of hoping you did create it as it would have been a brilliant effort to plug the game! You sold me in any case, will buy it this weekend when I have a bit of free time.

You should get yourself on a commission deal!
