Nole and Rafa to play an exhibition match in Spain in July

Published in Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

Quote:

Basically it says that Nadal and Djokovic will play an exhibition match on 14th July at Real Madrid's football stadium, Santiago Bernabeu, Spain. They aim to beat a world record by drawing 80.000 people to the match, the largest audience ever for a tennis match. The biggest audience for a tennis match was 35.681 people to watch Clijsters against Serena Williams.

The money from the match will go to Nadal's and Real Madrid's charities, as the event will also coincide with the 110th anniversary of the club.

I for one hope they play a best of 15 set match lasting over 48 hours.

6 days after Wimbledon final, 2 weeks before Olympics beginning.

They seriously couldn't have done this in the offseason or something? During the most important time of the year?

Smart of Federer to skip.

They want Federer to win the Olympics.

Could be a repeat of the Wimbledon final a week earlier for all we know! I don't see anything wrong with the timing - it's an exo and close to home for both Rafa and Novak. Thats the only time of year they could use the pitch (before it's re-laid). For a great cause and it'll be a world record too probably.

Might be awkward if Rafa's coming off more losses to Novak (could Novak have won both RG and wimbledon?!!!) but at this point I think he's come to terms with it - they seem more friendly again.

I bet the spectators will be extremely aroused by this upcoming grindfest.
Like Mourinho's defensive tactics wasn't enough.

Re: Nole and Rafa to play an exhibition match in Spain in July

Always amazes me the big deal people make of exhos. "How do they have the cheek to complain about the loooong season and then play an exho?? " Tennis is second nature to them. They're going to be holidaying after Wimbledon and nobody's going to pick up a racquet until they step on the pitch. And the match won't even compare to the lightest intensity practice session. In other tournaments they'll be doing intense physical practices and thinking about the upcoming event( the mental wear and tear can't be underestimated). They've both put Olympics as a priority, so the fact that they're playing this proves that Exho's don't take energy from players(the most tiring aspect is the flight but it's very close for both in this case)...And this is for charity anyway which also undermines the argument that players only play exho's instead of tour events for the easy money

Well, when they travel continents just to play an exo, then it's not always easy to understand, however playing in Spain shouldn't be a big deal to either of them.

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”
