The Djokovic Story on 60 Minutes

Yes, he is a solid number 1, but he's been overshadowed for too long by Federer and Nadal. Is the world of tennis and the one outside it finally ackowledging and seeing the real Novak?
It's notorious that USA's most prestigious profile Tv show, CBS's 60 minutes, is feauturing Novak in his latest programme aired on Saturday March 25th. His interaction with the imperturbable Bob Simon is priceless. How can not everyone love this guy? is that even possible?

Watch the 14 minutes here, it is really worthwhile even for non Djokovic fans:

Re: Novak Djokovic on CBS 60 minutes. Has he already made it?

I usually watch 60 Minutes but I had no idea Novak was going to be profiled last weekend. When I saw the introduction I literally screamed at the TV I was so excited.

IMO 60 Minutes is the only true legit news magazine show on U.S. TV so it's quite prestigious for foreign stars to appear on it (during the weekend of the Grammys they profiled Adele), they earn a huge American audience.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Yes. Very much so.

Novak isn't that lovable - look at the crowd reaction to him most of the time. He's an entertainer sure but he's a bit polarising. I love Nadal but can see why others may not (their loss ) if it comes down to style of play; slow play etc. Assuming you can also tell why a lot of Nole's antics rub people the wrong way.

I don't mind his extrovertness - it's his nationalism that I struggle with - there's a worrying tinge of victimisation to it which is not good in my opinion - especially as someone that's been to Serbia it just does not sit well... Good for him for the 60 minutes segment - maybe it'll add to his audience.

I agree about the nationalism part, that's the only thing I don't like about him (well, and that he's a real madrid fan ). But he's such a genuine, authentic and charismatic guy I cannot get why some people don't like him. But then I also think the hate on Nadal is very disproportionate.

To dig that part you'd have to be from Serbia or Balkans at least, usually no other explanation... otherwise it will usually look weird or over the top

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

Are you saying we don't understand because we are not from the Balkans? I mean, are you implying that it is normal and "excusable"?

I am not trying to be aggressive just don't understand What you mean.

I'm saying from my viewpoint, that part of his "fits" the whole picture... while I understand that from the viewpoint of people far from here, it "stands out". Just different perspective.

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

I'm surprised the usual suspects haven't shown up to yell "Nole forum"

I liked this interview, Novak is really well spoken, I wish I could speak my second language as well as he speaks English. His relationship with his coach seems really sweet.

Re: Novak Djokovic on CBS 60 minutes. Has he already made it?

He's a sweet guy but maybe a bit too over the top for my tastes (nothing wrong with that, just not my cup of tea)

The bad thing is that he has to live in the Fedal shadow, because even if he's a worthy #1, those two are still the names people associate with tennis (in fact many people who don't follow tennis know Federer for example but wouldn't recognize Nole), so he still has a long road to walk

Making this particular show is a big step in the right direction for his future as tennis representative IMO.
