He's never been a villain in my eyes. Just a great character with a bit of arrogance (which is understandable) and anger at times. Genius players are often behave similar.

Johnny has 115-63 in breakers on the ATP tour and is a mental giant. Talent is a factor as well.

Re: New Marcelo Rios book just came out

Nadalmyhero, there is a lot of Rios stuff on You Tube, a lot of highlights, some interviews, portions of matches on all surfaces. Take some time when you have it to look at Rios, you will not be disappointed. My favorite matches are vs. Agassi in Miami in 98 and the first set vs. Agassi in Miami in 2002. And the video called Marcelo Rios Fantasia.

Re: New Marcelo Rios book just came out

I am all for bad and shady characters in tennis provided they ultimately provide the goods. Perfect case in this would be someone like Agassi. Was an anti-establishment, a tennis rebel, prodigous talented etc. but ultimately he did a lot for the sport by foremostly making use of his talent and winning grand slams. And now he is a perfect Ambassador for Tennis supporting NGO projects and so on.

Thats the reason why Rios doesnt even come in the scheme of things. He had talent so what ? Can name a hundred other players who were as talented and their GS career was as uneventful.

Medvedev,Rosset,Stich,Krajicek,Safin(To some extend),Hicham Arazi,Alami,Nalbandian and so on. Just because he meant a lot to Chile and to some extend South Americans doesnt means he means a lot to the rest of them.

Had hardly noticed Rios's career primarily because Agassi 2.0 was still in the making and Sampras had an offish sort of year and it was a weak era and Rios was there at the right time and its not as if he was there for a long time. Just when the limelight was on him the light went off him too. Really nothing special

But having said that whatever floats your boat or whatever makes Amigos and Esparantos happy. If Rios rocks your boat then why we want disturb the decorum.

Re: New Marcelo Rios book just came out

Shinoj, there is no way you can minimize or discredit what Rios achieved. No player who gets to #1 is lucky or was a fluke or took advantage of a weak era. Rios earned everything he got in tennis because he was a marvel of a player. In his two best years he was dominant. He was the best player on earth for six weeks. I'll give you that he wasn't an ambadssador like Federer or Nadal or the later Agassi but you have to realize, Rios could have become,, could have matured into an Agassi saint like figure, if his body held out and he was able to continue playing into his thirties. He retired at 28. Rios is a nicer guy now, he has matured. But there have been lots of players who were selfish minded in their primes who didn't care much about others or helping others - Sampras never did much, nor to my knowledge did McEnroe. Rios was a selfish player and self absorbed and very rude to many people but that's just who he was, not everyone can be Mother Theresa. Rios was a rebel renegade figure, there's something admirable about those kind of people too. But the most important thing is what Rios did on the court, he could play some magical tennis.
