Tennis and Sexism: Does it sell?

I know the issue of men vs. women has been discussed on this forum before. But, I can't help to notice that ESPN's coverage has been very sexist this year. Pam Shriver keeps talking about how Serena gets fined that much because she is a woman. She also complains how men go first during Prime-time. Do you think this is ESPN's strategy to maybe get more people to watch tennis? You know adding a bit of controversy to it all?

Pam Shriver keeps comparing guys to ladies as if it's possible. The other day she compared Cilic to Seles. It's nonsense but maybe the directions are coming for the top management?

Re: Tennis and Sexism: Does it sell?

eurosport forced me to watch the ivanovic match. ugh im pretty sure i could beat her. so as long as womens tennis is this bad they shouldn't even bother showing first rounds of the womens GS on TV.

Re: Tennis and Sexism: Does it sell?

the other day everyone was saying how Serena got off easy and Pam said if she was a men, she wouldn't be fined that much. I mean that's utterly moronic.

Its absolutley true though. Why do you think these women are all haveing photo opps and fasion shows. Tennis has decided to turn the womens game into the salesmen of the game.

On Pam Shriver. Lets get one thing absolutely straight right now. Pam is an ultra liberal feminist racist. She always has been. She has sided with the USTA with the Williams sisters on racial discrimination mant times over the years. The USTA has bent over backwards for those girls.

As much as people dislike Mary Carillo she is one of the few people that is pretty non bias and non political. Mary is a traditionalist when it comes to Tennis and should be given credit. Here analysis of the Serena situation was spot on and she does not try and make excuses or spin it away like Racist Pam does. Mary has been attacking Agassi as well a lot. She truely cares for the future of the sport and not who puts money in her pocket.

People must also realize that Tennis has become the sport of elitist liberals. The game has been taken over by money and government funding. Its always had a little of this going on but the current game is the worst its ever been. The big difference is that now its political. Look up political donations to campains and government funding and you will see exactly how politicalthis game has become.

Andre and his clan of dopers and commentators are some of the biggest liberals of the bunch. Want some more.....

Cahill, Gilbert, Shriver, Mary Joe, Morareu, McEnroe, P. McEnroe..... all are the primary commentators, ultra liberals.

Chris Evert says she is conservative but she is a closet liberal.

Oh and Stating that sex runs womens tennis is not a sexist. Its sexist if he believes that sex running womens tennis is a good thing. Think before you call people names.

Re: Tennis and Sexism: Does it sell?

The mere idea is ludicrous.

Men's tennis >> women's tennis, any way you look at it. While it is true that women's tennis is comparatively much more popular (in comparison with men's tennis) - than women in some other sports, it's still kinda stupid to link it with sexism in any possible way.

It's like complaining why there is more men's football matches that women's. Actually, it's not *quite like* it - because women's football is nowhere near as popular as women's tennis - but it shows the general idea: TV runs what it expects that will draw bigger audience; as simple as that. What's that got to do with sexism is beyond me.

There's actually too much women's tennis on tv... And I mean that seriously.

Re: Tennis and Sexism: Does it sell?

You want the WTA to compete with the ATP, then start training women to actually play tennis, not mindless ball bashing/unforced error fest.

The current generation of ladies could not hit a backhand to save their lives, their movement sucks, and they are mental midgets. They tried to emulate the men and think, hmm being tall and having a lot of power will work for us.

This is why ladies like Henin keep the WTA legit because they actually have an all court game, not some useless 6-1 shrieking banshee that moves like a wounded turtle.

Thank you Justine and Kim for coming back and saving us a little bit of sanity by showing the ladies how real tennis is played. If i had to watch another Sharapova or Ivanovic match i would snap.

Re: Tennis and Sexism: Does it sell?

Pfft please don't start me on ESPN - they are so biased whether it is a women's or men's match. Give me Eurosport everytime unfortunately I live in Canada therefore have to suffer ESPN for the Slams. Pam Shriver is the worst and if they talk over a tennis match with what they did in their careers one more time I will scream. I have to attack the mute button which spoils the coverage. Sorry off track a bit lol!

i am neither, what i said was the truth and it makes me sad to be honest. i dont think the tennis organisations are the only ones to blame though, the players are concerned more with their appearance and their fashion lines/modeling work than their tennis careers. if this doesnt change their level will stay the same and top seeds will lose in first rounds against nonames and players just coming out of retirement win slams.my point is tennis is just one part of life where women are being exploited for sex but they have the power to do something about but it seems theyre content with what they have so thats why i hate the wta

Serena herself brought up the point about being fined more than a man would have been. Pam Shriver may have just been repeating what Serena herself said. Can't speak to Pam Shriver's leanings one way or the other since I try to tune out a lot of her commentary anyway.
