Re: Aegon Champs, London cheering thread, june 8-14

His shoulder is fine, there are a few lines in L'Equipe today and he isn't in pain anymore. Last week he also had some problems with his back, but he's fit now.
He often has trouble closing out a set, it's nothing new with him. He says he was leading 6-3 and then made a df, missed a forehand and brought Querrey back into the match. It sounds like he didn't really recover from it. But he seems confident, it wasn't a bad match in his opinion.

I can confirm what Jim is saying to be accurate, was at both his singles and doubles match yesterday (& his warmup- geez that guy must be sick of me already ). I was surprised to see on here that people were blaming his shoulder problem for the loss of this match. As Jim has now confirmed, his shoulder and serve appeared fine to me during both his matches yesterday. In the singles match he did make a lot of DF's where he often messed up his service rotation resulting in the ball landing in the net because he was overrotating but his serve was definitely at full pace and also won him many free points (of course Querrey is also not the best returner). Other than the messing up on the big points in the TB (as mentioned), also he DF on set point I believe- that was inexcusable, he really played quite a good match. His FH was on fire at many points of the match and he hit some beautiful touch volleys. A lot of the match was a service display, as expected but both players were also displaying great FH's and touch at net- more touch from Jim but it was a good quality match really. He did struggle to return Querrey's serve a little at times, though.

Before the match a lot of the members of the crowd had saw that he was a seeded player but were commenting that they had never heard of him. However I'm pleased to say that he really won a lot of them round with his tennis- his game just suits grass so well imo and that is a rare thing these days- and I think the crowd appreciated this. They were "ooohing" and "aaahing" at some of his shots, especially over his FH. After the match someone commented "But he was the better player throughout the match, this is such a shame", which I definitely agree with- unfortunately he just got a little too tight at key moments in the match and made some really stupid errors. Another example of this, other than in that TB, is his service game at 4all (I think that was the scoreline?) where he had a lead and eventually lost it by missing a ridiculously easy smash, where he just had an open court to put away the shot. However, I'm not worried for him going into Wimbledon because over 5 sets, he is going to have a lot more time to make these errors and recover from these bad moments in matches.

It was still a pleasure to finally see him live and speak with him briefly. Just a shame his time here at Queens was so short (I was counting on him at least winning the doubles match ).

Forgot to mention, I see people in GM were talking about heavy betting against him leading up to the match, well there were these people at his match who were constantly talking about live betting (I think they were doing it over the phone during the match from the stands- and also during Ginepri/Seppi- the previous match), maybe they were part of the 'inside' sources.

He also played a nice, entertaining match in the doubles (I'll write up about that later if people would like it). Pictures also to come, eventually.

Q. You must have so many different emotions going through your head. Was it like a rollercoaster for you?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, yeah, it's quite crazy..I never expect to win a Grand Slam.
I never dream about that because for me, I was not good enough to beat those guy.

Maybe the sky will fall?
