Match Point Saved ATP Title Winners

  • Who won a match withstanding the most match points in the 21st century? Answer: Rainer Schuettler, who saved 10 match points (two MP's on return) to defeat Andreas Seppi in the second round of Kitzbühel 2004. The German won 3-6 7-6(13) 6-0 withstanding match points at three different games:

It's the Open Era record equaled by Simon Youl, who beat Glenn Michibata 3-6 7-6 7-6 (Schenectady '89). The second place share Schuettler and Alberto Martin, who saved 10 MPs against Adrian Voinea in Bucharest 1999, 3-6 6-4 7-5)

In a Davis Cup rubber of a 1930 tie between USA & Italy, Wilmer Allison defeated Giorgio De Stefani 4-6 7-9 6-4 8-6 10-8 after saving 18 (!) match points. Allison saved two match points in the 4th (Allison trailed 2:5) and sixteen in the 5th set (he trailed 1:5)

wow just had a short look at the statistics and noticed that haas was involved in pretty many matches that included match points-saving winner (unfortunetely most times on the loser side )

Besides these matches Tommy
- defeated Miketa (Stuttgart 2000) after saving 6 match points and
- lost to Corretja (Lyon 1998) after wasting one match point.

Re: Match points saved (21st century)

Stats of the Top 20 players considering their involvement in MP matches and SP sets.

An exemplary Djokovic's 2012 season:

2-0 & 3-3 means he won in that particular year two matches saving at least 1 MP and didn't lose any having MP. He also won two sets when he was a SP-down and lost two sets wasting a set point. If a player wins for example 6-3 5-7 6-2 blowing MP in the 2nd set I count it as SP. If a player wins two sets saving MPs (Murray d. Robredo 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 for instance) one set is counted as SP the other one as MP.

What does this stat tell us? Approaching every season we can expect that majority of the notable players will be involved at least once in an MP match and each one of them will be involved in a few sets of SPs saved/wasted.

As I mentioned a couple of times on this forum, Murray had a very long period - for tennis standards (over two years) - when he had been winning all sets once he got a set(match) point, and suddenly lost three matches in the 2012 season within three weeks wasting match points. It's bizarre stuff, and the only explanation I think is that he had been so concentrated at the most crucial stages of so many sets that something in his mental focus finally let him down, and coincidently it happened in the MP sets.

The comprehensive statistics of set points saved/wasted has been possible to generating only since 2010, however, I know all sets of this type (by a tiny margin of error) as far as the best players born in the 1980s are concerned: Hewitt, Federer, Nadal etc.

Re: Match points saved (21st century)

Ljubicic also saved a couple of match points against Mikhail Youzhny in the Doha QF.

Moya saved 5 instead of 3 against Verdasco too, if I am not wrong.

Favourite players:

Nadal ~ Fish [Fisho] ~ Ferrero [Juancho] ~ Hewitt [Llautó] ~ Nalbandian

Maybe, I didn't see these matches but here are pieces of information:

"Youzhny got off to a good start, taking the first set after breaking Ljubicic in the third and fifth games. But Ljubicic came back strongly, serving 18 aces to shut out Youzhny who had his chances in both the second and third sets. Ljubicic saved a break-point in the eighth game of the second set and the second game of the third to wrap up the match"
- nothing about a match point. If it's truth that Ljubo saved a break-point at 2-6, 3:4 (bp) we can say "he saved a mini-match-point".

"Moya saved a match point in his first-round win over Australian wildcard Luke Bourgeois, five match points in his second-round victory over fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco then came from 5-3 down in the third set to beat Marcos Bhagdatis of Cyprus in the quarter-finals".
"In other second-round play, Austrian Jurgen Melzer topped Aussie Chris Guccione 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and former world No. 1 Spaniard Carlos Moya saved three match points before outlasting his countryman Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3."

So

Moya said:
"But here, in the first match I saved one match point playing so-so, second match I played better, saved five match points. It gives you a lot of confidence, no matter against what players you did it."

Anyway thanks Yashirobai, I've changed Moya from 3 to 5

Hmmm, breaks in the 3rd and 5th game in the first set... if it's truth, Youzhny couldn't had a break point in the 8th game of the 2nd set because...
1st set: 1:2 (break), 1:4 (break) = Ljubicic served as a first player in the 2nd set and in the 8th game only Youzhny could served.

Ljubicic DID NOT face match points vs Youzhny, only vs Soderling in the semis.
