Re: Match points saved (21st century)

I saw a match at Wimbledon in 1989 where David Pate beat Tom Nijssen saving match points in the 4th and 5th sets. I wonder if anyone has ever saved match points in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th sets?

Pate def. Nijssen 6-4 2-6 1-6 7-6(7) 15-13

I know Pate saved 4 match points in the 5th set. Do you know how many MP's did he save in the 4th? Thanks for this info, I knew earlier only three matches where a player saved MP in the 3rd and 5th set.

I cannot remember that but Pate was serving second in the 5th set so was serving first in the 4th set. I think Nijssen was serving for the match in at 5-4 or 6-5 in the 4th set and was 40-15 up and lost serve but I cannot say how many matchpoints he lost in all, I think there was one in the tiebreak also.

Other matches I can recall, Ricardo Acuna was matchpoint/s down in 1st qualifying at Wimbledon in '85 and went on to reach the quarters. I cannot remember if it was just 1 or more than 1; Sandon Stolle lost a match against Kelly Jones in the '89 Canadian Open after having something like 13 matchpoints! It may have been only 11 but it was certainly double figures. Boris Becker won the US Open that year after saving 2 matchpoints(I think) against Derrick Rostagno in the second round(I think Rostagno lead 6-4 in the 4th set tiebreak), on one of the matchpoints Rostagno was in at the net ready to put away a volley for the match but Becker's shot hit the netcord and flew over the Californian's racket! Lucky Boris!

There was 6-7 7-6 7-6. I don't know the tie-break scorelines It's interesting because in Internet circulates information that the most match points in the Open Era saved Panatta - 11 against Warwick.

Re: Match points saved (21st century)

I just remembered that Pate vs Nijjsen match and Nijssen's face when Pate served an ace to get to match points up in the 5th set. A very tough result to swallow for him. A great match though.

I guess I most be wrong in that case. I heard it on world service radio. I was pretty sure it was at least 11 but it is a long time ago. Great stats by the way and nice site.

Re: Match points saved (21st century)

Stefan Edberg saved matchpoints against Wally Masur en route to winning his first grand slam title(Aussie Open Dec '85). Brad Gilbert lost to Robert Seguso after having 4 matchpoints at Wembley in '88 and missed 7 matchpoints against Aaron Krickstein in L.A. in '89.

It almost happened for the first time () today when Hanescu saved MP in the 3rd and 4th set against Hernych, and was 4 points away from defeat at 5:6* in the 5th

Re: Match points saved (21st century)

Hey Voo, don't know if you count qualifying matches, but today Daniel Silva saved 4 MP's against Olivier Patience.

He saved the first two at 4*/5 and 5*/6 in the third set (don't know what was the score at these games), and the other two at the final TB (4*-6 and 5-6*).

Re: Match points saved (21st century)

Hi Caio

Thanks for this info. I don't count Challengers, Futures and qualies to all tournaments but this kind of info is always appreciated in this thread... In the last Challenger in Wroclaw, Cruciat saved one match point against Janowicz...

Re: Match points saved (21st century)

What about today's match of Silva against Lopez-Jaen? Were there match points in the 2nd set?

Zampieri saved MP at 5:6 in the final TB against Souza (3-6 7-6 7-6). 3 hours 21 minutes...
