Re: Ranking of amount of titles by surfaces

You're out by 10 with Sampras, it's actually 51 titles on hard. Still, good to see my thread below has some uses....

Just for the sake of completism, here are the grass title leaders:

1. Pete Sampras (10)
2.= Jimmy Connors (8)
2.= Roger Federer (8)
2.= John McEnroe (8)
5. Boris Becker (7)
6.= Vijay Amritraj (6)
6.= Bjorn Borg (6)

And here's a continuation of your list of hardcourt and clay title leaders:

Hard (indoor/outdoor)
6. Boris Becker (42)
7. Stefan Edberg (35)
8.= Stan Smith (26)
8.= Arthur Ashe (26)
10. Bjorn Borg (25)
11. Ilie Nastase (24)

Clay
3. Manuel Orantes (30 - my fault for not highlighting the surface for his titles in my thread)
7. Jose-Luis Clerc (20)
8. Mats Wilander (19)
9. Andres Gomez (16)
10. Jose Higueras (15)

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Re: Ranking of amount of titles by surfaces

In the hard (indoor/outdoor) category, you have to further define it as hard or carpet, probably separating the two. Most of the indoor titles that Becker won for example were carpet which is of course much different than hard. Same goes for Edberg, Lendl, Connors, McEnroe and others.
