My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

Hello,

This is a sequel thread to my ranking thread here: Open Era Ranking (April 22 1968-November 2010): an attempt

I thought it might be more meaningful to rank the players each year than to compare eras.

Here we go:

Code:
1968
1 Rod Laver	35,5
2 Arthur Ashe	26
3 Ken Rosewall	23,5
4 Tom Okker	19
5 Tony Roche	15,5
6 John Newcombe	15
7 Clark Graebner	13
8 Pancho Gonzales	11
9 Fred Stolle	9,5
10 Dennis Ralston	8,5
11 Cliff Drysdale	7
12 Roy Emerson	6
13 Andres Gimeno	5
14 Alex Metreveli	4
14 Wilhelm Bungert	4
14 Marty Mulligan	4
No discussion possible as to who might be n°1, that year. My data start from April 22, with the 1st open tournament in Bournemouth

Code:
1969
1 Rod Laver	65,5
2 Tony Roche	38,5
3 Tom Okker	33,5
4 John Newcombe	30,5
5 Arthur Ashe	17
6 Ken Rosewall	15
6 Andres Gimeno	15
8 Fred Stolle	14
9 Pancho Gonzales	11,5
9 Roy Emerson	11,5
11 Cliff Richey	10,5
12 Cliff Drysdale	8
12 Earl Buchholz	8
14 Zeljko Franulovic	6
14 Stan Smith	6
Grand Slam for Laver. End of discussion.

Code:
1970
1 Rod Laver	45
2 Ken Rosewall	36
3 John Newcombe	32,5
4 Arthur Ashe	28
5 Tony Roche	25
6 Stan Smith	22
7 Cliff Richey	17
8 Ilie Nastase 16
9 Tom Okker	15,5
10 Jan Kodes	14
11 Zeljko Franulovic	13
12 Roger Taylor	11
13 Roy Emerson	10
13 Andres Gimeno	10
15 Dennis Ralston	9
Newcombe won Wimbledon, Rosewall won the US Open. Laver won 15 tournaments including many equivalents to present-day "series" events and has a winning HH against his two main rivals. Lance Tingay voted for Newcombe but the panel of journalist who made the entry lists of the 1972 WCT Tour gave the n°1 seed to Laver. Newcombe in his autobiography in 2002 said the honour should go to Laver.

Code:
1971
1 Rod Laver	39
2 Ken Rosewall	37
3 Ilie Nastase 36
4 Stan Smith	32
5 Arthur Ashe	30
6 John Newcombe	28,5
7 Tom Okker	25
8 Jan Kodes	24,5
9 Marty Riessen	15
10 Cliff Drysdale	15
11 Zeljko Franulovic	14
12 Clark Graebner	13
13 Cliff Richey	10
14 Tom Gorman	8,5
15 Bob Lutz	7,5
Laver still n°1 mainly because of the 13 match winning streak of the Tennis Champions Classic, which I rate +/- equal to a Grand Slam win. Laver was also #1 at the WCT ranking that year (which included the Australian Open). He's had a very good win in Berkeley and couldn't play the US Open due to contracting (+ RG but this since 1970).

Code:
1972
1 Ilie Nastase 55,5
2 Stan Smith	40,5
3 Ken Rosewall	23,5
4 Manuel Orantes	21,5
5 Andres Gimeno	19,5
6 Jimmy Connors	17
7 Rod Laver	15,5
7 Arthur Ashe	15,5
7 John Newcombe	15,5
10 Bob Hewitt	15
11 Jan Kodes	14
11 Tom Okker	14
13 Alex Metreveli	13
14 Cliff Richey	11,5
15 Tom Gorman	10
No problem for Nastase.

Code:
 1973
1 Ilie Nastase 63
2 Tom Okker	37,5
3 John Newcombe	31,5
3 Jimmy Connors	31,5
3 Stan Smith	31,5
6 Jan Kodes	20
7 Rod Laver	19,5
8 Manuel Orantes	17
8 Ken Rosewall	17
10 Arthur Ashe	14
11 Tom Gorman	12
11 Nikki Pilic	12
13 Adriano Panatta	11,5
13 Roger Taylor	11,5
15 Marc Cox	9
Nastase #1, just like in the ATP ranking. Only I have Okker #2 because of the doubles while he's 5th in the ATP ranking.

Code:
1974
1 Jimmy Connors	61,5
2 Björn Borg	41
3 John Newcombe	32
4 Guillermo Vilas	31
5 Ilie Nastase 25
6 Arthur Ashe	22
7 Stan Smith	21
8 Rod Laver	15,5
9 Roscoe Tanner	13,5
10 Ken Rosewall	13
11 Manuel Orantes	12,5
12 Alex Metreveli	11
13 Tom Okker	10,5
14 Dick Stockton	9,5
14 Raul Ramirez	9,5
No discussion possible for #1 rank. Rod Laver is #4 in the ATP ranking while he's #8 in my ranking. Rosewall is #10 despite the two Slam finals. He's #9 at the ATP ranking. Evidence that Grand Slam is not everything.

Code:
1975
1 Manuel Orantes	40,5
1 Arthur Ashe	40,5
3 Jimmy Connors	38,5
4 Björn Borg	38
5 Ilie Nastase 32,5
6 Guillermo Vilas	30
7 Raul Ramirez	24
8 Brian Gottfried	14,5
8 Adriano Panatta	14,5
10 Roscoe Tanner	13,5
10 Tom Okker	13,5
12 Harold Solomon	13
12 Eddie Dibbs	13
14 Vitas Gerulaitis	11
15 John Alexander	10
15 Onny Parun	10
I was disappointed to have a shared #1 rank and quite surprised - I must say - to see Orantes having one of them. He won many doubles tournaments, which is overall no big deal in my system but for a year-by-year survey, it might weigh. However he's won Forest Hills, so my ranking is not undefendable. Connors is #1 at the ATP but #3. Ashe has been elected "Player of the Year" and my ranking agrees. Beside Wimbledon, he also won the WCT Finals in Dallas that year.

TO BE CONTINUED !

Let's move on, now !
Code:
My Ranking 1976
1 Jimmy Connors	51
2 Björn Borg	39
3 Manuel Orantes	33
4 Guillermo Vilas	31
5 Ilie Nastase 26

Code:

  9 Dibbs, Eddie (USA)
10 Gottfried, Brian (USA)
11 Tanner, Roscoe (USA)
12 Ashe, Arthur (USA)
13 Rosewall, Ken (AUS)
14 Fibak, Wojtek (POL)
15 Stockton, Dick (USA)
More or less similar but Borg was elected "Player of the Year", while achievement-wise it's definitely in Connors' favour.
Code:
My Ranking 1977
1 Guillermo Vilas	61,5
2 Jimmy Connors	41
3 Björn Borg	38
4 Brian Gottfried	34,5
5 Vitas Gerulaitis	27,5
6 Manuel Orantes	17
7 Raul Ramirez	16,5
8 Dick Stockton	15,5
9 Wojtek Fibak	14,5
9 Ilie Nastase 14,5
11 Corrado Barazzutti	13
12 Eddie Dibbs	12
13 Sandy Mayer	10,5
14 Roscoe Tanner	10
14 Harold Solomon	10
14 Stan Smith	10
Code:
 ATP Ranking
1 Connors, Jimmy (USA)
  2 Vilas, Guillermo (ARG)
  3 Borg, Björn (SWE)
  4 Gerulaitis, Vitas (USA)
  5 Gottfried, Brian (USA)
  6 Dibbs, Eddie (USA)
  7 Orantes, Manuel (ESP)
  8 Ramirez, Raul (MEX)
  9 Nastase, Ilie (ROM)
10 Stockton, Dick (USA)
11 Barazzutti, Corrado (ITA)
12 Rosewall, Ken (AUS)
13 Fibak, Wojtek (POL)
14 Solomon, Harold (USA)
15 Tanner, Roscoe (USA)
Most controversial ATP ranking. No way Connors could have been ranked higher than Vilas who had 2 GS tournaments, 17 tournament wins and one of the longest match win streaks in the Open era, only stopped by Nastase's spaghetti racquet in Aix. Borg was elected "Player of the Year" again but he played too inconsistently throughout the year, chosing for WTT instead of RG. He's definitely the #3, for me.

Code:
My Ranking 1976
1 Björn Borg	50
2 Jimmy Connors	42
3 Guillermo Vilas	29
4 John McEnroe	27
5 Vitas Gerulaitis	23,5
6 Raul Ramirez	22,5
7 Eddie Dibbs	21
8 Brian Gottfried	16
9 Jose Higueras	12,5
10 Ilie Nastase 12
11 Arthur Ashe	11,5
12 Wojtek Fibak	11
13 Tim Gullikson	10,5
13 Corrado Barazzutti	10,5
15 Jose Luis Clerc	10
Code:
ATP Ranking 1978
1 Connors, Jimmy (USA)
  2 Borg, Björn (SWE)
  3 Vilas, Guillermo (ARG)
  4 McEnroe, John (USA)
  5 Gerulaitis, Vitas (USA)
  6 Dibbs, Eddie (USA)
  7 Gottfried, Brian (USA)
  8 Ramirez, Raul (MEX)
  9 Solomon, Harold (USA)
10 Barazzutti, Corrado (ITA)
11 Tanner, Roscoe (USA)
12 Orantes, Manuel (ESP)
13 Ashe, Arthur (USA)
14 Higueras, José (ESP)
15 Clerc, José-Luis (ARG)
Here again, I don't see how Connors could have been #1. The ATP knew it since they again elected Borg as "Player of the Year" contradicting again their own ranking.

Code:
My ranking 1979
1 Björn Borg	62
2 John McEnroe	51
3 Jimmy Connors	36
4 Vitas Gerulaitis	33
5 Guillermo Vilas	23
6 Roscoe Tanner	19
7 Victor Pecci sr	17
7 Peter Fleming	17
9 Jose Higueras	14
9 Eddie Dibbs	14
11 Harold Solomon	12
12 Pat Du Pré	11
12 Wojtek Fibak	11
14 Brian Gottfried	10
14 Gene Mayer	10
Code:
ATP 1979
1 Borg, Björn (SWE)
  2 Connors, Jimmy (USA)
  3 McEnroe, John (USA)
  4 Gerulaitis, Vitas (USA)
  5 Tanner, Roscoe (USA)
  6 Vilas, Guillermo (ARG)
  7 Ashe, Arthur (USA)
  8 Solomon, Harold (USA)
  9 Higueras, José (ESP)
10 Dibbs, Eddie (USA)
11 Pecci, Victor (PAR)
12 Mayer, Gene (USA)
13 Fleming, Peter (USA)
14 Gildemeister, Hans (CHI)
15 Fibak, Wojtek (POL)
#1 is OK. I can't see how Connors can be #2, again. McEnroe won the US Open and the Masters + was a beast at winning singles and doubles tourneys. Two players above 50pts in my ranking. We'll never see that again.

Code:
My ranking 1980
1 John McEnroe	50
2 Björn Borg	49
3 Jimmy Connors	36,5
4 Ivan Lendl	26,5
5 Gene Mayer	23,5
6 Wojtek Fibak	19,5
7 Guillermo Vilas	19
8 Harold Solomon	17
9 Brian Teacher	15
10 Vitas Gerulaitis	15
11 Brian Gottfried	14
12 Eliot Teltscher	13,5
13 Bob Lutz	11,5
14 Jose Luis Clerc	11
15 Roscoe Tanner	10
Code:
 ATP 1980
1 Borg, Björn (SWE)
  2 McEnroe, John (USA)
  3 Connors, Jimmy (USA)
  4 Mayer, Gene (USA)
  5 Vilas, Guillermo (ARG)
  6 Lendl, Ivan (TCH)
  7 Solomon, Harold (USA)
  8 Clerc, José-Luis (ARG)
  9 Gerulaitis, Vitas (USA)
10 Teltscher, Eliot (USA)
11 Gottfried, Brian (USA)
12 Teacher, Brian (USA)
13 Dibbs, Eddie (USA)
14 Tanner, Roscoe (USA)
15 Fibak, Wojtek (POL)
Here I'm surprised about my ranking. Borg won RG, Wimbledon and the Masters. McEnroe won the US Open. But his consistency in doubles + singles, gives him the edge. But again, I'm really surprised by the result I had.

Code:
My Ranking 1981
1 John McEnroe	58,5
2 Ivan Lendl	38
3 Björn Borg	29
4 Jimmy Connors	28
5 Jose Luis Clerc	19,5
6 Johan Kriek	16,5
7 Balazs Taroczy	16
8 Guillermo Vilas	15
9 Vitas Gerulaitis	14
10 Peter McNamara	13,5
10 Mark Edmondson	13,5
10 Gene Mayer	13,5
13 Yannick Noah	13
14 Roscoe Tanner	12
15 Victor Pecci sr	11,5
Code:
ATP 1981
1 McEnroe, John (USA)
  2 Lendl, Ivan (TCH)
  3 Connors, Jimmy (USA)
  4 Borg, Björn (SWE)
  5 Clerc, José-Luis (ARG)
  6 Vilas, Guillermo (ARG)
  7 Mayer, Gene (USA)
  8 Teltscher, Eliot (USA)
  9 Gerulaitis, Vitas (USA)
10 McNamara, Peter (AUS)
11 Tanner, Roscoe (USA)
12 Noah, Yannick (FRA)
13 Kriek, Johan (RSA)
14 Mayer, Sandy (USA)
15 Taroczy, Balazs (HUN)
No problem here.

Code:
My ranking 1982
1 Ivan Lendl	54
2 Jimmy Connors	48
3 John McEnroe	42,5
4 Guillermo Vilas	30
5 Mats Wilander	24
6 Vitas Gerulaitis	23
7 Jose Luis Clerc	17
8 Yannick Noah	15
9 Johan Kriek	14,5
10 Gene Mayer	12
10 Jose Higueras	12
10 Peter McNamara	12
13 Tomas Smid	11
13 Wojtek Fibak	11
15 Steve Denton	10,5
Code:
ATP 1982
1 McEnroe, John (USA)
  2 Connors, Jimmy (USA)
  3 Lendl, Ivan (TCH)
  4 Vilas, Guillermo (ARG)
  5 Gerulaitis, Vitas (USA)
  6 Clerc, José-Luis (ARG)
  7 Wilander, Mats (SWE)
  8 Mayer, Gene (USA)
  9 Noah, Yannick (FRA)
10 McNamara, Peter (AUS)
11 Higueras, José (ESP)
12 Kriek, Johan (USA)
13 Denton, Steve (USA)
14 Teltscher, Eliot (USA)
15 Gomez, Andres (ECU)
Again a controversial ranking by the ATP. McEnroe couldn't have been #1, without GS tournament wins while Connors won two and much less tournament wins overall than Lendl. Connors was elected "Player of the Year". My ranking favours Lendl's consistency with 15 wins, mainly on the WCT tour where he was really impressive. There's a case for Connors and for Lendl, I think. But not for McEnroe.

Re: My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

Do you know something about ranking from 70es and first half of 80es?

Re: My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

No, NP. I don't know the system used, back then. Just the rankings. But there's a general agreement that it didn't reflect the true value of the players.

I'll just move on, if you don't mind.

From 1983 on, the rankings were usually undisputed. So less comment needed.

Code:

Note that Wilander made some sort of a Grand Slam back then since he won 3 Majors + Key Biscayne, which was a Draw 128 with best of five all the way. And he's the only one to have won 4 such tournaments in a row in the Open era since the Australian was a draw 32 in 1969 when Laver made his Grand Slam (and the South African Open was a Draw 64 with best of five all the way). However he wasn't so consistent on the other events, hence he isn't that dominant in the ranking.

Becker was elected "Player of the Year". To my knowledge it's the last time the ATP are contradicting their own ranking. But this time, their ranking seems to be fair. Becker won the US Open and Wimbledon. Lendl won the Australian + 9 ATP sanctioned tournaments. He was much more consistent.

Re: My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

I'm working on some stats for Top 5 players at the end of the year and I'm in 1986 now.. very strange that Noah made 4th spot

It is very complicated and in some cases for sure wasn't true

Re: My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

Yeah it's surprising for Noah.

Here's my record for him in 1986:

Code:
SF Philadelphia 1986	2
F La Quinta 1986	1
F Monte Carlo	1986	2
Monte Carlo D 1986	0,5
Forest Hills 1986	2
SF Rome	1986	2
Rome D 1986	0,5
F Basel 1986	1
Basel D 1986	0,5
Wembley 1986	2
A good season but weak for a 4th spot. Was Wembley still a "series" equivalent back then? Steeb's presence in 1989 tells me that Tokyo indoor was still well noted in their ranking that year.

Editing in the previous posts: I've omitted the Palermo doubles 1985 in Nyström's record and forgot to rank Perez Roldan and Chesnokov in 1988.

Edberg is #1 and Player of the Year but I had the info that the ATP didn't want to elect him because he skipped the Grand Slam Cup. Is that right?

Re: My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

Strange you have such a big differnce between Ivan and Boris for 1989.. even Lendl said he doesn't trust computer and that Becker deserved to be Year end Number 1

Re: My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

Thank you, NP, for giving comments. It's helpful because I take advantage of them to see if I made mistake. But in this case, I didn't see any problems.

Here are my records for both players in 1989. I've underlined those tournaments that were unofficial. Okay in Lendl's case, I'm not sure the Stuttgart classic was real competition but for the rest, it definitely was. And in any case, these exhos didn't make the difference, I think.

Lendl:

Code:
Australian Open 1989	12
Scottsdale 1989	2
Chicago 1989	2
Key Biscayne 1989	6
F Tokyo outdoor	1989	1
Forest Hills 1989	2
Hamburg 1989	4
Queen's Club	1989	2
SF Wimbledon 1989	4
Montreal 1989	4
Jericho 1989	2
F US Open 1989	6
Bordeaux 1989	2
Sydney indoor	1989	2
Stuttgart Classic	1989	2
Stockholm	1989	4
Antwerp 1989	2
Becker:

Code:
Milan	1989	2
Philadelphia 1989	2
Indian Wells D 1989	0,5
F Monte Carlo 1989	2
SF Hamburg 1989	2
SF Roland Garros 1989	4
Wirral 1989	2
Wimbledon 1989	12
US Open	1989	12
Bercy 1989	4
F Masters 1989	3
Quantitatively speaking Becker's season was very poor. He really went for the big ones here. Very few tournaments played between Wimbledon and Flushing and few tournaments played between Flushing and the Masters. Fortunately, he won Wimbledon and Flushing (+ SF at Roland).

On the other hand, Lendl was very consistent throughout the year, as usual in the eighties even though he failed in the big ones (except the Australian, which I've considered equal to other GS, perhaps a mistake?).

In my opinion, any point system should give Lendl the edge for that one, unless you completely disregard non-Slam tennis. Which does not necessarily means he was the best player.

Re: My Open Era Ranking: Year-by-Year Survey

O.k, I trust your work.. its very detailed

I will soon post article about end of the year Top 5 and tournaments that they played, looking on how many they played together. I think it will be interesting but I will for sure point on this page and your work, just to see how ranking can be different

Djoker should get an impressive score for 2011.
