Grand Slam midgets?

By GS midgets I mean players that had a pretty good ranking but always failed to deliver in the big four.

I think a good criteria would be players that reached the top 20 at some point but never got past the third round of any Slam, or players that reached the top 10 but never got past the fourth round.

Agustin Calleri is one that springs to mind:

Career High ATP Ranking - Singles: 16 (7-Jul-03)
Best Slam performance: 3rd Round (Roland Garros '00, US Open '00, '07)

Nicolas Massu:
Career High ATP Ranking - Singles: 9 (13-Sep-04)
Best Slam performance: 4th Round (US Open '05)

Any other players?

Re: Grand Slam midgets?

Paradorn Srichaphan:

Career High ATP Ranking - Singles: 9 (12-May-03)
Best Slam performance: R16 (Australian Open'04, Wimbledon '03, Us Open' 03)

Albert Portas:

Career High ATP Ranking - Singles: 19 (1-Oct-01)
Best Slam performance: R32 (Roland Garros '97, '00, '02, Wimbledon '00, US Open '01)

Could also fit the criteria former top 30 players that never got to the third round, and top 40 players that never won a Slam match (doubt that anyone would show up ).

Re: Grand Slam midgets?

I think Fabrice Santoro qualifies although not according to your definition, his best ever ranking was 19th and he has spent almost 20 years in the top-100 and entered a record number of Grand Slam tournaments, yet his Grand Slam results were limited. Of course he made the QF in Australia in 2006 plus two fourth rounds at Roland Garros in 1991 and 2001. He must be close to being the record holder for the most first-round defeats in Grand Slams.

TT Singles 2012: W: Winston-Salem SF: Honolulu CH, Rotterdam, Memphis, 's-Hertogenbosch, Wimbledon, Beijing, Vienna QF: Barcelona, Nice, Bastad, Petange CH, Bangkok R16: Monte Carlo, Madrid
TT Doubles 2012: W: Caloundra CH (with kingroger), Acapulco (with keqtqiadv) F: Beijing (with KittyTennis) SF: Sydney (with Belludal), Memphis (with Belludal), Guadalajara CH (with kingroger), Wimbledon (with RHB1993) QF: Barcelona (with extremaduratenis), Cincinnati (with stbanchile)

Re: Grand Slam midgets?

Is that Arthur Ashe and Stan Smith, Wimbledon and US Open champions, that I see on that list?

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Yes, those were two more errors. Should have noticed the error with Arthur Ashe at least.

edit #2: I found the logical error I made yesterday, the above updated list should be more accurate now.

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Re: Grand Slam midgets?

Ljubicic made the semis in RG once.

I'd rather go with Karlovic, who reached only one R16 at GS-level so far.

Juan Antonio Marin was only 55th at his best but somehow deserves to be called a GS midget.
He has lost his all 17 GS first round.
The closest he was to win was when he lost against Sampras in RG 99 ( 7-6(5) 4-6 5-7 7-6(9) 4-6)

Ivo Karlovic.

Career high 18.

20 slams played. Been past the 3rd round once (4th round Wimbledon 2004).

The best of his stats is that of the 20 slams played, 1st round KO - 12 times.

Karlovic is generally a midget in best-of-five matches. He is not able to keep serving rockets for more than a couple of hours, he gets tired easily. His Davis Cup record is also poor.
