Pick-A-Winner #65 - ATP World Tour Finals 2009 | Final Update | Congrats to n3gative!

PICK-A-WINNER (PAW)#65 - ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS 2009

Previous Winners

2008: 1.Ex Lion Tamer 2.JBdV
2007: 1.keqtqiadv 2.greatkingrat
2006: 1.Sambuca 2.sparkus8
2005: 1.sparkus8 2.bad gambler
2004: 1.Bilbo 2.Pironkov

Welcome to Pick-A-Winner (PAW), the Predictions game!

Playing is simple: over the course of the tournament choose any 7 matches from the Group stages, Semi-Final and Final, and post who you think will win them. The scoring points besides each fixture represent the points you score if the corresponding player wins. Whoever has the most points at the end of the tournament is the winner.

Participants
The ATP World Tour Finals is open to the top 16 ranked players in the PAW Champions Race after the last ATP tournament of the year (MS Paris). Players ranked 17 to 20 in the Champions Race will be ALT's 1 to 4 and will be used in case one of the top 16 ranked players fails to play the tournament.

A qualified player who has not posted any picks before the start time of the first match of the final day of Group matches will be considered as a 'no-show' and will be replaced by an Alternate. Alternate players may post their PAW picks until it is determined that they cannot play the tournament.

Tie Break Rules
In case several players have the same number of points, the following rules will be used to determine their final position:-
1. The greater number of correct picks.
If there is still a tie then:
2. The greater points of a single pick.
If there is still a tie then the greater second-best pick and so on.
No pick will be considered better than 0 points.
3. Champions Race ranking.

Posting your picks
Please post your picks in the following format:
PAW# Player A (winner) over/def Player B (loser)
# number of pick in ascending order (1 to 7)
Please use the official last names of players, not nicknames.
A valid pick must include the names of both players (winner first) and the word over or def.

Before posting picks, check that the matches haven't started yet. A pick that is posted after a match started is invalid and may be replaced. In case a match doesn't take place due to withdrawal or change of the draw, the pick is invalid and may be replaced. If a player retires or defaulted after the match has started (even if one point was played), the pick is valid.

Changing your picks
If you want to ammend a previous pick (cancel or change), quote the original post and add a new message. Don't edit the post and never delete it!
A moderator (bad gambler) will scan this thread every day to track on deleted/edited posts. If you caught cheating, you will be automatically disqualified from this tournament. In certain case, you might be banned from playing temporarily or permanently. Please play fairly, everybody!

Don't forget, you're limited to 7 picks throughout the whole tournament.

a top 15 Race ranking since February with a number of top 10 results throughout the season. He has just

Player Comment : A big thank you and respect to all the PAW managers this year. May the best man/woman
 win in London!

 8th US Open, 3rd Valencia.

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : 2 - 2004 (6th), 2007 (8th).

Favourite ATP player : Tomas Berdych.

Fact : Tina is one of the few remaining players who has played PAW since its beginning
in 2004 and is the only person playing this week to have played at the first ever PAW Masters
Cup in 2004. She won her fourth PAW title this year at Acapulco and three other top 3 results
have secured her third appearance at the PAW WTF.

Player Comment : Experience counts. ;)

Career PAW Titles : 3 - Wimbledon 2007, Houston 2008, Tokyo 2009.

he will be hoping to improve on his two previous appearances at this tournament.

Player Comment : After 2 pretty bad Masters Cup appearances for me in 2007 and 2008 - it
is time for big result here, at least I hope so GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
Also - please people - WE NEED MORE MANAGERS!!!!!!!!!!!

14. njnetswill (USA)

Name : Will

Career PAW Titles : 5 - St Petersburg 2005, New Haven 2007, MS Toronto 2008, Delray Beach 2009,

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : 3 - 2005 (9th), 2007 (14th), 2008 (3rd=).

Favourite ATP player : Olivier Rochus.

Fact : Will achieved the No.1 position in the PAW rankings for two weeks in April and makes
his fourth appearance at the PAW WTF following another successful season. He won 2 PAW titles at
Delray Beach and Montreal this year as well as a number of top five results. He will be looking
to secure another good result at the WTF following his 3rd place last year.

Player Comment : Thanks to everyone who has kept PAW alive all these years, and hello to
all my fellow PAW players who have been around for a while.

15. pedroruizbo (Argentina)

Name : Pedro Ruiz de Galarreta

Current Race/Entry Rank : 15 (Pts : 1849)

Career PAW Titles : 3 - Doha 2009, Hamburg 2009, MS Paris 2009.

Best results in 2009 : 1st Doha, 5th Stuttgart, 1st Hamburg, 6th Umag, 6th Moscow, 5th Lyon,
 1st MS Paris.

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : Debut

Favourite ATP player : David Nalbandian.

Fact : Pedro is another player with three PAW title wins this year at Doha, Hamburg and Paris in only
his second year of playing PAW. He came with a late run to qualify for the PAW WTF following
his title win at MS Paris last week and is probably the form player coming into this week.

Player Comment : I am very happy to qualify for the PAW WTF this year. Good luck to all the players.

16. Caio_Brasil (Brasil)

Name : Caio

Current Race/Entry Rank : 16 (Pts : 1824)

Career PAW Titles : 3 - Queens 2007, MS Madrid 2007, Lyon 2007.

Best results in 2009 : 3rd Houston, 5th Queens, 2nd Stuttgart, 3rd Indianapolis, 5th Washington,
 2nd MS Cincinnati, 2nd Bucharest, 6th Lyon, 6th Basel.

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : Debut

Favourite ATP player : Juan Monaco.

Fact : Caio has surprisingly not won a PAW title since his debut season in 2007 but since his
short retirement from PAW at the start of this year, he has scored a number of top 5 results,
including a 2nd place at MS Cincinnati in August. He has never been one to shy away from the risky
‘big pointers’ but maybe this year we have seen some slightly more cautious picking from Caio in
a bid to secure his long awaited debut appearance at the PAW WTF. No doubt he is one of the most
popular players and managers to participate in PAW over the past few seasons.

Player Comment : First of all I would like to say I'm very honoured to be among the PAW World
Finals players and also to thank Shaun for the opportunity to write a little bit.

I haven't won any title since 2007 but being in the top 16 at the end of the season is great for me
as being in the WTF is something I always wanted since I started playing PAW, which is without a
doubt my favourite game on MTF. No TT, FITD or any other, PAW is definately the best one because
 of many reasons.

Now that I'll be playing London I hope I can fight for the title. Each one of my 3 titles were special
and I thank some players: Nicolas Mahut for beating Nadal in Queen's (+30 points match), Santoro for
beating Roddick and Falla for beating Ljubicic in Lyon (Santoro was a key pick to comeback after a
bad start and Falla clinched the title for me) and my biggest title, which was also my best performance
in a PAW tournament was in Madrid when I scored lots of big points, had a 15-1 record through the week
and had picks for the wins of Nalbandian over Federer, Nadal and Djokovic to get the title. I just hope
I can pull something similar next week.

Anyway, the point of this message is to thank every person who has helped this game to be created, to
grow and specially in 2009 those who have helped PAW to survive. I won't name anyone as those who
helped know who they are. Finally, I would like to ask for other players to consider managing some
tournaments next year, as this will be really needed in 2010 in order to keep PAW alive, and this
time it's a real deal. Please, I want to fight for titles like I did in the past 3 years and I also
want to try reaching the WTF again in the next years. We need you!
Alternates

Code:
17. Martin (Great Britain)

Name : Martin

Current Race/Entry Rank : 17 (Pts : 1793)

Career PAW Titles : 3 - Nottingham 2007, Doha 2008, St Petersburg 2008.

Best results in 2009 : 3rd Queens, 3rd Stuttgart, 3rd MS Montreal, 2nd New Haven,
4th Bucharest, 7th MS Shanghai, 2nd St Petersburg.

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : Debut

Favourite ATP players : Roger Federer and Andy Murray

Fact : Martin missed out on an automatic qualification for the 2008 Masters Cup by
one spot last year and he has unfortunately suffered the same fate again this year. He
didn’t win a PAW title in 2009, but a number of strong results over the second half of
the season were enough give him his debut appearance as an First Alternate in this
year’s PAW WTF, following Evita's withdrawal.

Player Comment : Happy to have had another good year. Disappointed that I didn't
manage to win a title but can't believe I missed out by one spot again this year.
Everyone should probably put their life savings on me finishing 17th again next year.

18. Hellcat (Great Britain)

Name : Chris

Current Race/Entry Rank : 18 (Pts : 1742)

Career PAW Titles : 0

Best results in 2009 : 4th Brisbane, 5th Aust Open, 2nd Belgrade, 4th Hamburg,
 6th MS Cincinnati, 5th Bangkok.

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : 0

Favourite ATP player : Fernando Gonzalez.

Fact : Chris made a strong start to the season in January with top 5 results at
Brisbane and the Australian Open. Since then consistent results helped him to maintain
a top 16 position in the PAW race rankings but he has been unable to play PAW over the
past month, causing him to slip just outside of the top 16 and therefore he will now be
an Alternate here at the PAW WTF.

Player Comment : I hope I get the chance to play, I would have made it in the
top 16 if I hadn't been on holiday for the last 3 weeks of the season!

19. robuś (Poland)

Name : Rob

Current Race/Entry Rank : 19 (Pts : 1738)

Career PAW Titles : 10 – Indianapolis 2005, Umag 2005, Beijing 2005, Lyon 2005,
 Chennai 2006, Bastad 2006, Dubai 2007, Chennai 2008, Buenos Aires 2008, Halle 2008.

Best results in 2009 : 5th Auckland, 3rd Buenos Aires, 5th Newport, 4th Gstaad,
 6th Bangkok, 3rd Vienna, 2nd Valencia, 6th MS Paris.

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : 4 - 2005 (7th=), 2006 (12th), 2007 (5th), 2008 (8th).

Favourite ATP player : ?

Fact : Rob is undoubtedly one of the most successful players in PAW history winning
10 titles and having previously held the No.1 ranking in two spells for 54 weeks during
2007/08. This year has been one of his least successful years in PAW, but strong results
during the past three weeks in Vienna, Valencia and the Paris Masters have given him an
outside chance of making his fifth successive appearance at the PAW WTF as an Alternate.

Player Comment : ?

20. qczi (Hungary)

Name : Peter

Current Race/Entry Rank : 20 (Pts : 1738)

Career PAW Titles : 1 - Buenos Aires 2009.

Best results in 2009 : 4th Auckland, 5th Vina del Mar, 1st Buenos Aires, 2nd Acapulco,
3rd MS Indian Wells, 3rd Belgrade, 7th MS Paris.

No. of PAW WTF Appearances : 0

Favourite ATP player : Jurgen Melzer.

Fact : Peter won his first PAW title this year at Buenos Aires and looked good for
a place at the PAW WTF by the mid point of the season. However, results during the second
half of the year were not as good but a 7th position at last week’s Paris Masters has
moved him into the final Alternate place for this tournament.

Player Comment : I don't think I will participate this year for the very reason that
I dont deserve it, but I'll try my best to finish in the top 16 in 2010.

Re: Pick-A-Winner #65 - ATP World Tour Finals 2009

Announcements

22/Nov/09 - Day 1 RR matches completed and 12 players correctly predicted the Murray victory over Del Potro to sit with 10 points on the leaderboard. Only Caio Brasil and pedroruizbo took a risk with Del Potro and both will now have an uphill battle to move up the leaderboard. Caio's second pick of Verdasco looked good for a set and a half but Fed's eventual victory now gives him a mountain to climb. 14 Qualifiers have currently posted picks, so the 2 Alts who have posted picks are currently in the tournament for now.

23/Nov/09 - Nadal's 2-0 defeat was maybe the surprise of Day 2 but this didn't stop 11 of the 16 players picking a Soderling victory and scoring a very healthy 17 points in the process. Björki was the only player to pick both Soderling and Djokovic today and her 34 points total now gives her a 7 point lead over seven players. Evita's confirmed withdrawal from the tournament and all 15 other qualifiers making picks means that Martin is the only Alternate to make it into the tournament.

24/Nov/09 - Only Frank Winkler picked both winners today for 15 points, but Labamba was the big mover with his Federer pick to move to the top of the leaderboard with 3/3 and 35 points. Björki stays second with 34 points and six other players all stay in contention with 27 points. Everything still to play for as we move into Day 4.

25/Nov/09 - More surprises at the O2 Arena today with two 16 point winners available and most players picked at least one of them. Only n3gative picked both Soderling and Davydenko to catapult to the top of the leaderboard with 59 points from 6 picks. Labamba holds a strong second place with 4/4 correct picks and 51 points, but he will have to keep a close eye on Martin who has only used 2 picks for 33 points. Will Martin be rewarded for his patience or has he missed out on the big pointers early in the tournament? Latest tournament betting odds:- Labamba 3/1, Martin 4/1, Chris 84, greatkingrat, gulzhan, ostm89, sdtoot all 8/1, Bjorki, n3gative, njnetswill 10/1.

26/Nov/09 - What an amazing end to the day with Del Potro's 2-1 victory over Fed to eliminate Murray from the tournament. A very low scoring day for all the PAW players and only Frank Winkler scored any points with his Del Potro pick. Seven players on the leaderboard will all now fancy their chances of the title but the current leader n3gative has 59 points in the bag with 1 pick still to play, so it is up to the other players to have to pick winners to close the gap. The bookies appear very uncertain as to who will win the title and the latest betting odds have been turned upside down:- n3gative 4/1, Martin 9/2, Labamba, gulzhan, ostm89, sdtoot all 6/1, Björki 8/1.

27/Nov/09 - Ten players (including leader n3gative) correctly picked Djokovic to beat Nadal today, but in the final RR match only one player (gulzhan) correctly picked Davydenko to beat Soderling. n3gative's final total of 70 points is starting to look formidable but he must now sit and wait for the final three matches to conclude knowing that the chasing pack must pick big winners to have any chance of snatching the title. The bookies appear to also agree and the leader's odds have shortened significantly:- n3gative 2/1, sdtoot 3/1, gulzhan 4/1, Björki 6/1, Chris 84 & ostm89 10/1.

28/Nov/09 - The title hopes for a number of players were riding on a Soderling victory today but Delpo was too strong in the end. Only one player (greatkingrat) picked Davy to beat Fed for 17 points and now moves into third position. With just the final match to play, n3gative cannot be beaten and is confirmed as the winner of the title. Big congratulations go to Adam.

29/Nov/09 - Final update now completed. Final congratulations go to our winner n3gative. Thanks to everyone for playing PAW this year and hopefully we will see you all in PAW next year.

Best Wishes
sdtoot

Re: Pick-A-Winner #65 - ATP World Tour Finals 2009 | Player Profiles in post #2

Nice profiles, but actually - it is my 3rd consecutive appearance in PAW Masters Cup (I started PAW in October 2006. and from then to today I qualified for all Masters finals). My real name is Nino (as you do not have it written there ), and my favourite tennis player is Ivanišević (though he is not active, nowdays I do not have any special favourite)

After 2 pretty bad Masters Cup appearances for me in 2007 and 2008 - it is time for big result here, at least I hope so GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

Also - please people - WE NEED MORE MANAGERS!!!!!!!!!!!
