Re: Early Commitments

Chardy and Mathieu are expected commitments but nice to see Robredo enter, although he is a previous champion there.

It's not a given that French players play Metz.

True, but for PHM it is as close as it can get for a home-tourney.

Yes.

As for Chardy, I think he should play less ATP250 tournaments and concentrate more on bigger tournaments :
he plays many many ATP250 tournaments (New Haven will be his 11th one, World Team Cup excluded, Metz his 12th one ).

On the opposite, he played only 2 ATP500 tournaments. I think he should play the final two ones in the year : these indoor ATP500 should suit his game. All the more as if he's top-30 in the end of the year (which is possible), he will have to count more ATP500 results mandatorily. And this year already, he has at least to reach the semifinal to be able to still get some ATP points in an ATP250 tournament : in an ATP500, a quarterfinal is enough.

Chardy doesn't look having a very solid physical : I think he should concentrate on better tournaments.

Yes, you're right, PHM was a lock. But I think the tournament organizers will be happy to have already secured Chardy. And Monfils anyway. They seemed pretty disappointed last year that Monfils, Tsonga, Gasquet... were playing in Asia instead of Metz, it's definitely an improvement for them.

I hadn't seen your post when I posted, sorry. I agree with you, and I'm not sure it makes much sense for Monfils either, I was only talking from the perspective of the tournament.

Santoro is now helping the tournament director Boutter to keep the tournament alive and it might help to get a better field (although last year's field was pretty good imo, very even, but it was lacking a couple of big names):

I think the latter two will be absent again, Tsonga has no more points to score in such a small tourney, and I wonder if Richard will be ready to play in France, unless he really is capable of a complete change of approach. But having Gael play is certainly good for Metz.
Are you going?

He doesn't need to play either, one or two of the French top players is enough for a small event like Metz.
Santoro will also play there, obviously.
But since Richard really is a good friend of Santoro, I wouldn't rule it out.

(I'm not going, no.)
